peoples did, bought the stock honda radio control remote and wired it up through usb but he hasnt installed it yet. matched the cruise control on the opossite side obviously..
installing it would require removing the steering column to wire it correctly.

I've seen several people saying that the Jensen is good, but what about the rest? Anyone have input on how well the Audiovox/dayton and Blaupunkt remotes work?
I have the Pioneer that's listed in the 1st post and I haven't had much luck with it. If there's any sunlight at all it only works a fraction of the time, requiring me to press a button several times before it's recognized, if at all.
I can't completely trash it because it's the only one I've ever tried, plus the IR receiver is homebrew (works fine on my HTPC though). Any input would be appreciated.

Same here with the RC-10. Although it may be more of a problem with the receiver than the transmitter. Or positioning of the receiver.
IR is light - and the sun produces more IR than anything. I don't think there's any way around it other than using a heavy tint on yer windows or repositioning the lines of sight.

That's pretty much what I figured, but I was hoping other remotes may have better resistance to interference/stronger transmitting or just magically work better than the Pioneer.
I just managed to grab a Jensen remote off ebay for a good price so I'll have something to compare to the Pioneer soon. I'll post what I find.

If anyone wants a much easier solution to steering wheel mounted controls, i.e. you already have steering wheel controls and want to hook them to your carputer, check out http://www.xkeys.com/custom/xkmatrix.php. There are 2 versions, one is USB, the other is PS/2. The USB can't store multimedia commands, such as volume +/- or track forward/back, according the the tech rep. But the PS/2 one can. And instead of having to write a program or code, you can simply plug a keyboard into it, and the device will learn the keystrokes from the keyboard. Much easier in my book. Costs around $59.

I got the jenssen off ebay and its superb...
the problem Im having is with the receiver.
My PC is in the back of my car (chunk?) so I cant get the receiver to work when using a serial extension... it seems there is a limitation with the length of serial cables. Anyone has any idea of how I can make it work?
Thnx

hi I have an original Steering wheel remote in my renault. it is connected to an Kenwood Adapter that converts the signals to infrared and send them to my kenwood radio.
Anyone knows a solution for using this to communicate with a irda usb dongle and girder?

pac makes a universal module like that & you can teach it any command through a remote... just set up one of those bs little remotes & then teach it to the pac module.... I would think the kenwood adaptor isn't programable

I don't think IRDA adapters are the same (plugged into your mobo, right?). They are meant for Data transmission, not for custom things like this. There are a couple of frequencies IR devices use. If you build one of those LIRC adapters, you can simply buy a different IR Receiver bulb adapted to the frequency of your remote. Then you'll be able to use Girder.

ok i guess that is my problem cause i find some comercial USB Irda Dongles in other forums that are used with girder and some ordinary TV remotes but when i use one of this girder compatible dongles it is no guranteed that the kenwood remote adapter ist recognized.
Is it so easy to change the receiver frequency when u have a handmade (Lirc) irda receiver?
Only change the infrared bulb and u have an other infrared frequency range? no change of other parts?
I know a lot of questions in bad english

I haven't seen a remote not get recognized with any of the run of the mill Serial receivers out there. (Haven't tried USB) I had a kenwood remote at one time and it worked. Look here and see if your remote is listed: http://lirc.sourceforge.net/remotes/
If you go to the main page on that site, they have plans to build your own, or places to go to buy one. Also search around - there are a few pre-made units out there.
