Touchscreens are so last year!
Quote:
Devices equipped with a new generation of touch-free interfaces could appear on the market by the end of next year, according to US display specialist Ethertouch.

I hear some guy is working on upgrading the backlihting and making it dimmable on our xenarcs, but its taking so damn long that I would have thought that was "last year" too!
 just pulling your leg m8!
anyways, what about those touchscreen with "vibrating" feedback so you know what areas are clickable? kind of supposed to allow "fumbling for clickable areas like you'd fumble for a button"... dunno how well that would work, I read a while back that alpine was putting it on their highest end unit

cheeky *****.
Yeah i had heard about the tacticle touch screens but i suspect they will just be another thing to go wrong or make it even more blurry. I wish i could use an IR touch panel but they are so damn bulky.

that have thost boxing games at arcades with the similar not so advanced version of this technology already. I'm suprised they mentioned only minority report, and not Johny Mnemonic(but i guess a ton of movies have it as well) which also has a similar thing.....i think gloves may have been involved. I think Tom Cruize's job of operating the system was pretty lousy, it seemed his gestures had no rythme or rythem to them

Kinda neat, it gets tougher to finds new way to interface with machines, so I guess this is something new. While it may be nice for occassional input, I would think it would get very tiring holding your hand in the air and waving it around and ****. (if you have a gyration mouse, you know what I mean - thank god it works on the ground too!). I could see one gesture useful, middle finger to reboot machine.

the arcade machines normally use ultrasound transcievers. Interestingly enough someone was setting such a rig up on the ceiling in the corridor outside my office before.

You would still have to give it the three finger salute as opposed to one, just in case it misconstrues a hard on as a signal to reboot.

Many of the boxing games I see actually have a shock sensor in the gloves you carry. To prove that I do not actually punch when i play I just tap them together.
Aso for the ducking and dodgeing, alot of times its just a motion or light detector, again proven by my mad cheating skills.
Cool technology but I will want to see how they control random movements inside of the field.

The alpine thing is somewhat a step in the right direction. It does give the sensation of pushing a button, but it gives the sensation whther or not what you pushed is actually a button.

natebest, can you please write in an inteligible fashion???
it does (or doesnt?) give the sensation of pushing a button...
but it gives the sensation whether or not what you pushed is actually a button?
you mean it doesnt give the sensation of being a BUTTON, but lets you know where areas are "clickable" is that it? That would be good enough for me... I mean in-car my main peeve is to have to look down and hunt for buttons...

So am I understanding this correctly in that you dont actually touch the screen but rather make gestures in front of it???
That doesnt seem like an improvement at all
I rather have the tactile feel of physically touching somethin
