USB Hub not working after coming out of hibernation

The problem that i'm having is that some of my devices aren't working when coming out of hibernation. I only have two usb slots on the back of my computer and need 5 for my devices.

Devices I have are:

Lilliput Touchscreen
Slim DVD drive in usb case (One USB cable for power and another USB cable to make it work)
Holux GM-210 GPS
Wireless USB network adapter

I have a four port hub and the devices connected to it are the touchscreen, GPS, network adapter, and the usb cable that powers my DVD Drive (it goes from a usb/ps2 connection to a coaxial plug connection). The usb cable that makes the DVD drive work is plugged directly into the computer.

After hours of trying to see what worked and didnt work, I found that I had to have the DVD drive connected directly to the computer for it to work coming out of hibernation. From there everything else worked and I thought that I was done. But after coming home tonight froma friends house my touchscreen did not work while evything else did. So i unplugged it and then plugged it back in. Then my gps stopped working after that. I thought that maybe there was too many things plugged in so I unplugged the USB power cable for my DVD drive and tried using the ps2 connection to power it. Problem with that is that it makes the drive invisible to the computer after coming out of hibernation. The network adapter always works no matter what so im not really concerned about that. Anybody have any ideas. Is it my hub? I really cant figure this one out.

Any ideas or help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The wifi could still be the problem if it's USB 2.0 and the others are 1.1. Get another 4-port hub so that you have more options to try. Put the TS and GPS in one and the wifi and DVD in the other. The power should probably go in the first one since those 2 don't take much power.

This thread does look familiar!

Erf, is your hub externally powered ?

If it is, it certainly requires a 5v 2.2A source.... power it from a 5v molex. 5v rail should be down when hibernating, windoz should redetect all the stuff when resuming from hibernate.

If this hub isn't powered by anything else than the puter itself, the problem's there. Basically you try to power the hub itself, you tsk, your gps and a wifi dongle with a single source that can only deliver 5v @ 500mA. ...

ok i tried a few more things and found out that if i put two things devices together in the hub, no matter what those two devices are, one of them wouldnt work. One device might work and then after antother hibernate the other device might not work. Wierd. I think it might be a crappy hub so ill try another one tomorrow.

I'm having very similar problems without hibernation (my system won't come out of hibernation at all). Randomly at startup, devices and/or hubs won't work properly - until I unplug and re-plug. I've tried 3 hubs (SMC, Netgear and Belkin), none of them fix it.

After doing some googling last night for a fix, I found a usb patch file for via chipsets. Dont know if itll work since its dated 2002 but this is what the patch fixes:

Question: What issues does this patch address?
Answer:
This filter patch is version 1.10 of the VIA USB filter patch. It contains all of the following fixes, listed as a history of which fixes were added by version number of the patch.

1.02 (1) A connected usb hub that has no usb devices connected will be disabled
after another usb hub is attached at the another available root port.
(2) When transfering large of ammounts of data, the system will hang.

1.05 Fix the issues where the driver will page fault under Windows 98SE.

1.06 Fixes noise from USB audio converter or speaker.
Supports usb add-on card.

1.08 Supports Windows 98 and Windows 2000.

1.10 Adds support for Windows XP.
Fix the issue where USB devices will be reenumerated when system resumes from Standby mode.

The last fix is what got my attention. Ill try it out on my car pc and let you guys know if it helps.

hmmm, interesting reading - i'm experiencing problems where my USB -> IDE Connector, when plugged in, prevents my system from booting.

Its plugged in via a hub but as soon as i remove it the system boots fine,

i did experience this problem with my USB Pen but it sorted itself out.....
Any tried the above fix?

if unplugging the hub (from the computer) and plugging it back in works, you can use devcon to disable the hub before hibernate and enable it after hibernate (like I do).

Also, what OS are you running?

Im running windows xp pro. I just tried the patch not too long ago and it didnt work. It did help though because now the hub is always there instead of malfunctioning sometimes. Ill try using devcon because it eveything does work when i unplug it and then plug it back in again. Thanks

Ok I finally got everything to work right. Turns out my touchscreen was the one causing all the problems after coming out of hiberantion when connected to the hub. So, i just used Devcon and wrote a .bat file to disable it when hibernating and then enable it after coming out of hibernation. I also used Hibernation Trigger to run it. I would've used yours zPilott but Hibernation Trigger delays hibernation to allow the batch file to be run. Thanks for all your help.

yeah, that is on the list (should be pretty easy since it would work the same as delaying the shutdown).

Devcon does run quick enough though that my program will work. I just wish there was some way to find out if the system was going for standby or hibernate (or shutdown or reboot).
