tyre pressure check

Hi has anyone successfully installed a digital car tyre pressure monitoring system so it works via a serial port and displayed to the touch screen (on a nice GUI-Interface). I would like to know what is involved and what needs to be overcome in doing this?

Any help is appreciated folks.

Haven't heard about anyone doing it, but it's a cool idea and far from impossible.
All you would need is a bluetooth sensor and a nice piece of software.
A new plugin for centrafuse perhaps

Nokian Tyres have a BT sensor, but I haven't found out if its only for their reciever as well, or if they have an "open" interface.

My car comes equipped with a OEM tire pressure sensor. That data may be output by OBD2

The tire pressure sensors can also be purchased aftermarket I believe

No, but I've thought about it.

this system has a remote display available with extended info. I'm assuming it's a serial link. Might be able to work with that. Something I'd like to try someday when I get some of this other stuff done.

I have been looking into developing a system for the hobby market. I would love someone else to work with but I do not think I have developed far enough to publish my idea in full.

I do not think Bluetooth would be the best solution. It would require either a huge battery in the wheel or a module outside of the tyre. There are other frequencies that would use less power and would interfere less.
The reciever module would just need to be flexable. RS-232 control is a must and long battery life is a must. It would not be nice to have to pop open your tyre every 3 months to change a battery.

What else would be essential for a system like this?

Waterproof, able to withstand the rotational velocities and g-forces of being in a tire/hubcap. (going between 65MPH and 0 would put alot of stress on the device)

I have seen both of those systems. The first one can only tie into a car with the CAN system. While the Mazda6 I want will be ok, most cars do not have CAN yet. So that will be hard to interface with.

The second system has the same issue that many other systems have. no RS-232 interface. It has a little box you have to keep track of and mount. Also this system only has 4 sensors where I would like to see more, at least one for the spare tyre and the ability to measure trucks with 6 wheels and its spare.

The idea of batterless is nice. RFID has come a long way. I am looking for RFID development kits to do alot of things, without the need for tinfoil hats.

Have you thought about using Zigbee? You can integrate any number of sensors. (I think each node network consists of 127 or 255... definately more than necessary.) Also, Zigbee has been show to run for multiple years on a single watch battery... imagine if that battery charged itself by taking advantage of the wheel spin. Now, that might be something pretty useful!

I've already found a few zigbee transceivers that work on I2C and rs232-style serial. I'm actually curious to know if people are really interested and it's worth looking into more.

... or maybe it would just be easier to use the Alps system DeltaFX suggested and just translate from the CAN bus to rs232 or USB. Philips makes quite a few of these chips: http://www.semiconductors.philips.co.../#transceivers

They've already solved the battery issue... even for the spare!

Touche.

I will see if I can get a price on the ALPS system.
Zigbee still uses a battery. The ALPS system might be the best. I do not know why I did not think of translating the CAN to RS232. I actually feel kind of dumb not thinking of this.
Im going to back down now and look at my plans from the begining again.

(edit) After looking at the back of this unit http://www.alps.co.jp/e/press/new2004/0422_e.htm#
I think it still only can hold 4 tyres. and it has to have 4 cables run through the car to connect to an area close enough to transmit power. I will call and ask.

RS232 Tire Pressure Monitor

This article talks about the PressurePro system. I have used this and integrated it with a touch screen GUI in the Project54 system (http://project54.unh.edu) and it works very well for reporting tire pressure. The only problem is that you can only read the pressure information from the serial connection, it does not allow you to set any parameters. You will need programming experience and knowledge of serial communications as there is no software available for this system. It's also hard to find a retailer. I had to contact the manufacturer directly (http://www.advantagepressurepro.com) to order this.
