mpd4ppc ia an awesome pocketpc client for controlling mpd. Too bad there is not a car pc specific mpd client. If there were one, you could use both clients simultaneously.

I use Z2 remote2PC. It works great, when it works. Its like VNC but from the PPC perspective. screen rotation, zoom in/out, touchscreen support, you name it. My only problem is the damn thing only connects one in ten times. Comes with a 30 day trial. Bit expensive for the trouble I've had with it, but that might be a fault of my tablet, dongle, widcomm drivers, PPC6600, etc. Who knows? Give it a try and tell me what you think.

I just figured out my problem with z2 Remote2PC - my tablet doesn't create TCP ports unless the wireless card is in. Even if I'm not connected on WiFi it at least creates the ports then Remote2PC can grab one of those ports and works perfectly, everytime.

It could also be adapted to use on an actual screen instread of a PDA.
In fact, some very interesting modifications could come from it.
Definately worth a look.

One of the issues associated with using a Pocket PC as a car-pc interface or controller is that the screen size results in a display that is considered by most to be too small for it to be useful while driving. We developed a Pocket PC application to control our artificial intelligence management software, AIVMS, that is perfect for use as a car-pc controller. Here is the AIVMS Pocket PC remote controlling AIVMS with the media module frontend activated.
Note that the large buttons offer maximum visibility and can easily be pressed without using a stylus. All AIVMS commands are duplicated to the Pocket PC, so if you have the AIVMS ActiveHome home automation module installed you can control your home from you car, or from anywhere for that matter. This short demonstration illustrates how easy it is to turn on a light or appliance using the AIVMS Pocket PC remote:
You can download AIVMS software directly from here, and the AIVMS Pocket PC Remote software is available here.

Did you even take notice of the "Widgets"?
They are large buttons.
And highly adaptable.
And you can write your own.

Well, perhaps if you actually posted a link that "worked", more folks might take notice of your idea.

Phonecontrol.net has some control software for the PPC also. I think you have to install the 1.6 and the PPC software is a seperate download.

As a keyboard (going tback to the original quesiton), i beleive you can use termina services client or VNC and one of the full screen keyboard programs (like SPB or Resco). You touch, and then you can type.
Mechanic, your AIVMS software looks promising...i'm going to check it out.
Widgets...thats's more of a monitoring thing. I'll do that another time
