welp, i used to have a 9815, all you should have to do is switch aux-input on in the HU's settings... but you've tried that so im gonna have to go with its a wiring issue or a bad unit. you seem determined to wire this thing up yourself w/o buying the inexpensive plug from alpine; my suggestion would be to buy the KCA-121B from a local store like tweeter for testing purposes only. plug this in and hook up an aux source to it (i.e. your ipod) if your getting sound from it then you know you got your wires wrong. if not... id look into sending your alpine out for repair. Out of curiosity, do you have anything else plugged into the ai-net (like sirius or xm)?

as far as the switch on the side of your unit for the ai-net eq. on/off, this switch will disable the alpine from controlling the sound levels going to your speakers; you will have to turn up and down the volume using the ipod instead of the knob on your head-unit... so leave it on b/c that can be a pain in the ***.

I don't know if you've figured it out yet or not... but I've done exactly what you are trying to do many times before, with both Ai-net and M-bus applications. After you cut open the Ai-net cable, (colors might vary depending how old the cable is) you should see a yellow wire, orange wire, and 2 gray cables. In the first gray cable there is a sheild, red, and white wire. These are NOT audio wires... do NOT use these for audio input. I forget what exactly these serve... I think its data. But the wires you want are in the second gray cable... the sheild being the audio ground, green is left channel, and blue is right channel (I might have the left and right backwards, but I doubt you'd notice a differnce). Once this is wired and the AUX is turned on, you should have no problem.

yea thanks, i actually had the wrong wires i think i had the diagram upside down. the correct ones were blue and green i think

I suspect you have a non versatile link head unit but you do have the pink/blk wire in the power/speaker harness. This needs to be grounded but switched I believe or the rest of the unit will remain muted always.

and before you fry something just use a cable like this...

Sorry to bring up this old thread but it has helped me to solve the aux-in problem of my head unit. So thank you guys for your post.
I just followed the steps stated in the 1st post but since I can't find any available ai-net male plug, I have to solder some wires directly to the circuit board of the unit on pins 4, 5 & 6 of the ai-net port.
My unit is an old MDA-W700J. If someone has a similar unit with a missing manual, just follow these steps:
To access the unit's special functions including the "MUTE ON/OFF" feature, you have to press and hold the power button for several seconds until then you will be taken to the hidden menus. Here's a pic...


While inside this menu, the MONO button also functions as the MUTE toggle switch. It must be set to MUTE OFF...

Just press the power button once to return to the main menu.

It is also very important to locate the pink/black wire in the harness plug...


Then you have to install a switch in between that wire and the cars body ground. This is just a temporary switch which I used to see if the aux function will be activated...


By now, you will be able to toggle between the main menu and the AUXILIARY mode if you have properlly installed the switch...


If you want to connect multiple audio devices such as PSP, iPod, or external DVD players, you can also use a multi-port RCA hub for your own convenience...

I am hoping the 2nd gray cable suggestion is correct; I'm bout to open up my console to splice "ai-net" harness and this to hook up my new ipod which will be here Monday. I have heard/seen many of those FM transmitters for the sound quality seems to suffer; plus I don't want to have to F___ with changing frequencies, etc. on long trips.

Can anyone confirm if on the 2nd gray cable - the green is left channel, and blue is right channel???
