DIY alpine ai-net with rca/head phone adapter for ipod? gurus needed
so i have been through 2 kca-420is which i got off ebay. i brought it to an alpine service center, they tested it with no luck. being that i have the ai-net cable i cut off one end and wired an headphone jack to the audio on the ai-net. would this work?...well obviously it isnt working but i did a lot of reading on this and came across a few sites...i grounded that one wire and played with the other setting and nothing. do i have to do anything with the extra wires coming out of the ai-net to trick the HU that there is a cd changer or aux of some sort? sorry if this is confusing. i could just buy the $15 aux cable...but what fun is that! TIA
"After talking with Alpine tech support, it seems that Alpine HU's that have a setting on the menu to turn the MUTE funtion off, should be able to use the KCA-121B AiNet-RCA adapter to get an AUX input without a CD Changer. The guy on the phone told me that it depends on the model of head unit. If you have the AUDIO MUTE function on your unit and you can turn it off in the menu, you CAN use the adapter. Thank GOD! I was cringing at the thought of using an RF modulator, or having to shell out some $$ for a crossover. Basically, all you have to do is this:
1) connect the external source to the adapter
2) connect the adapter to the AiNet port on the HU
3) turn OFF the MUTE function on the unit
4) find the pink/black audio mute lead (or whatever color yours is)
5) install a switch that switches a ground to the mute lead."
here is the pinout for the ai-net
what im doing but going straigh to an ear phone jack.

So are you having a problem getting it into some sort of aux mode, or building the cable?

What you need is aux input read the freaking manual of your alpine head unit.
In the manual, it will tell you step-by-step how to setup to enable aux-input.
The adapter you bough is correct, but to use your walkman, ipod you also need the 3.5mm stereo to RCA adapter. So you can plug the KCA to Alpine iNet port then plug the 3.5mm-RCA to the KCA, and then plug that 3.5mm to the headphone port on your portable player (ipod).
Otherwise, you can buy the Alpine iNet -> Ipod adapter.

He didn't buy the adapter pictured. He cut up an AINET adapter and wired a headphone jack on it.
I have to admit, i've never heard of the 'mute' thing he's talking about. If the unit supports an AUX input, there's a setting in the menu to turn it on.

The "mute" he was talking about was in some of M-Bus model (late 90s). There is a mute wire suppose to be used for car-phone.

I suppose you mean it's supposed to allow the car phone to play through the stereo on the M-Bus model? I know that the mute wire on aftermarket (and some stock) radios will mute / attenuate the stereo so you can use your external carphone (or handsfree kit, I've had several hooked up so it mutes the stereo)

Yes, in this case it's audio either way. As long as you have the pins right, it should work. I know I had a problem when I built my IP-BUS adapter for my Pioneer that I had wired it with the pins backwards (the diagram was flipped) so it didn't work right.
First i'd verify that you have the connections right on the adapter.. after that, not sure.

i just verified and wrote down what wires are what
1. green
2. #2 when touching without outside ring
3. blue
4. orange
5. white
6. red
7. yellow
8. hard ground silver wiring
my question is which ground do i use for the audio? or does it not matter?
ground bus, signal ground, power supply ground
i had it on power suply ground with no luck...but it could be my HU that is the problem
i had the audio ground to the power suply ground...but when i use the other ground it wont let me change the volume on the HU

All you need in that connector are pins 4, 5, 6. As per the diagram you have. Disregard the rest. From the 3.5mm connector it should be like this.
AINet -> 3.5
6 - Tip
4 - Ring
5 - Sleeve

what do you mean my tip ring and sleeve? when i ground the audio to 5 the white ground it freezes part of the HU..like it wont turn on unless i unplug the ai net. i read in another post that the ainet should be switched to the eq setting but i tried on both and nothing. should interupt be on or off? should mute be on or off? should i be grounding the pink/black wire to make it say interupt?

For cable, just make sure you connect the right wire to the 3.5mm jack/plug.
Since you already have the AiNet cable, just buy RCA - 3.5mm jack and call it a day. You don't have to worry about soldering a wrong/reverse pin.
As far as enable aux input, what HU model you have? My CDA9830, all I have to do is get into setup mode, press up/down to scroll thru the menu item then select (press the vol knob) and turn lef/right to enable disable. Press the vol knob again to select aux label (TV, GAME, VCR, or AUX). There is no mute wire to ground. Mute wire are only on the older M-bus HU. The newer M-bus select "mute" off is in menu not wire.

For the second time, he doesn't HAVE a premade AI-NET aux-in. He took a standard AI-NET cable that he cut in half and is butchering to make the connection.
Tip - The outermost connector on a 3.5" conneciton
Ring - The center connector
Sleeve - The most inner connector
Tip - Left
Ring - Right
Sleeve - Ground
If it's freezing the HU, it's possible the pinout you have is incorrect. I believe as far as the AI-NET switch, it should probably be on the Non-EQ setting.

this is so frustrating...and im a girl all my wiring is correct i believe. my aux is on, mute i tried both on and off and the same with the interupt. i tried grounding the interupt wire, not grounding it. eq/norm switched those. i think i tried every combination. i have a feeling if i just buy the ainet/rca cable it is not going to work. this was my ex's HU and he had the ipod thing all hooked up with the 420i, before he pulled it it worked fine. are there any wires in the harness that are needed for the ainet to work? maybe when he wired it up when and soldered all the wires he left something out because i didnt have a cd changer
