Can I go straight from a component off the back of a pc motherboard into an lcd screen that has a/v component inputs? Im in the process of building a carputer setup but I dont want to have to go through the process of trying to find a vga lcd if I can do with a/v components. I found a nice motorized screen on ebay but its component only.

I was thinking I could build the pc then display video from it with the yellow video component on the back of the motherboard. Is this possible?

I don't know of a motherboard on the market that has component video (the red, green blue RCA hookups).

I'm thinking you mean composite video.
And yes, that will work if you have a motherboard that has a TV-out capability.

Understand that you will likely not be happy with the quality of the video using a composite signal.
And there are plenty of VGA screens to be had. Have you looked in the store here? DigitalWW? LogicSupply?

Hi. Yes you are right, it was composite. I got a little mixed up there. Basically its the same connector that would be on the back of a tv. How bad is the quality of a composite as opposed to the vga? I noticed so far that the price nearly doubled just for a vga connection and most of them arent motorized as well.

I use a composite cable form my tv out to my tele to watch my episodes of Top Gear and Mythbusters etc. The video itself is perfect, however the text of the folder and window names and menu's etc is almost unreadable. This is on a 68cm tv btw

Composite is a tv signal without sound and not modulated on carrier. It is also interlaced, and frames are updated with 25Hz(PAL) or 30Hz(NTSC). Colour is still modulated on its subcarrier. NTSC on 3.58MHz and PAL on 4.43MHz.

Resolution is restricted to avoid flickering due to interlacing. You get about 300 lines in NTSC (400 in PAL) and 350 pixels horizontally (PAL & NTSC) independent on 4:3 or 16:9.

I think that colour resolution might be even worse.

Thanks everyone. After viewing those pictures, I think im pretty much decided on VGA. My whole reason for the carputer was GPS and music. Id like to be able to read my windows desktop clearly so it seems vga is the only real option.
