Hi, first post
Sorry this topic is really old, but it came up on a google search and has been very usefull!
Im looking at making my own steering wheel controls for my Pioneer headunit which has the wired remote socket.
I think i understand everythink that is said about the resisters, for each button pushed it goes down a different resister and it does its thing.
What im not sure about though is when you say about GND + KEYD and GND + KEYD, what do you mean by this??
Also its by the use of a stereo headphone jack, the end is left channel, middle is right channel and back end is ground, but you only talk about 2 conections, what ones are used??
Hope its ok to bring this back up and hope you can help.
Many thanks
Mark.

Hello everyone,
I'm driving a Rover StreetWise and use a Pioneer DEH-P55BT... I already have a hard wired remote control standard on my car, but I used to had a Sony radio. With the Sony radio all buttons worked: vol+, vol-, track+, track-.
With my Pioneer radio, vol+, vol- and track- work fine, but when I press track+ it's the same as track-... So I am not able to skip to the next track which is really
Can I make some kind of simple modification myself to make it work? I don't want to buy a Pioneer car adapter of €50 just to be able to skip to the next track...
Thanks in advance!

See my post above.... "All resistor values listed above are to be connected between the tip and sleeve of the 1/8" plug (stereo headphone plug). Apparently the only use for the ring is that if you connect it to the sleeve the "Seek" buttons cycle through radio preset stations rather than directly tuning."

All I can think to suggest is to see if you can tap in and measure the exact resistances in the switch. It's possible that the one for Track + is at the edge of the tolerance for Pioneer, but beyond the allowable range for Sony. In that case... the only (sort of) simple idea I can think of is to bust open the switch and see if you can swap out the resistor.
If you're able to measure the exact resistance values of each button on the switch, post what you get and maybe someone (who is good at complex resistance calculations) can offer a simpler suggestion.

Yes i understand this, but what part is the 'sleeve' and 'ring' , i guess the tip is the very end.
cheers

The tip is the very end, the sleeve is the long metal part that extends all the way back to the plastic, the ring is the literally ring-shaped metal area between the tip and the sleeve...

Urgent! Connection and buttons lightning
Here is a pic of the 3.5 connector:
http://www.ftdichip.com/Images/TTL-232R-AJ%20pinout.jpg
Here are the parts: GND, Rx and Tx
I don't understand which part of this 3.5mm connector is connected to the steering remote control, please tell me where GND, KEYD and KEYAD is connected?
I think is like:
GND to GND
Rx to KEYD
Tx to KEYAD
but I'm not sure.
Hoy many voltage send the pioneer unit at KEYD and KEYND?
The steering wheel have lightning leds inside each button, can I use KEYD or KEYND for this as positive and GND to ground at the same time?

Hello you all!
Again, a bit late, this replay, but I accidentally discovered this thread.
Next weekend I will get my used car, a Mazda Premacy from 1999.
This car has a build in factory radio with tape player and a remote commander for the radio at the steering wheel.
This commander has the functions volume up and down, next/previous track and source.
I do not have any tapes anymore and I have a much better radio from my last car. This radio has a USB connection and is from Pioneer.
I pretty quick decided I would like to use my Pioneer radio instead of the tape/radio from the factory.
The only thing I regret is the fact that I cannot use the remote commander anymore.
I did find some Pioneer adapters for steering wheel commanders, but no one for the Mazda Premacy. Besides, they cost about 80 or 90 dollars.
While searching on the internet, I finally found this thread and I am very happy with it.
I looked at the needed resistors and decided to buy these and a 3.5mm stereo jack. Total costs about 3 Dollars!
I do not have my Mazda yet, but I already soldered a print with the several resistors and I connected my Pioneer car radio to a 12 V power supply.
The first test went very well! I was able to change volume, track and source!
The only thing I have to do now, is to connect the print to the commander.
I will keep you informed, if I assembled the whole set together in the car!
Greetings,
Branko.

You don't have to install any resistor, just connect to de 1, 2 o 3 cables to the 3.5mm jack. For example, on my Opel Corsa C, I had 3 wires:
- Brown for Ground
- Gray for antenna signal (it's for lighning inside each button)
- Blue/Red for remote radio control signal.
First discoonnect baterry conectors, remove carefully your airbag, and check how many wires do you have, identify wich are for horn installation, and airbag, and the others are for remote radio control, you can follow by colors, and check if it exist at back stereo area, inside the dash panel.
Please stay in contact, I will help you to solve it.
I've tested on my car, Opel Corsa C, and a Pioneer AVH-P4000DVD, and all functions work well. I've changed steering wheel because my car doesn't have it, and change the stereo for a video player.
This tutorial works with sony and pioneer, and you don't need any extra adaptor. Also on mazda car.
Remember, don't need soldier, resistors are inside each button on your factory steering wheel.
I wish I helped you. Sorry by my english, I'm a spanish speaker learning english.
Luis

Hi Luis!
Thanks for your reply. Your English isn't that bad. I myself have also some problems speaking/writing Englisch, because I am a Dutchman!
I will pick up my Mazda next weekend, and as soon as I have time, I will take a look at the radio installation.
I also have to find some parts to fill the hole after removing the original Mazda radio.
I will keep you informed.
Thanks again for your help. I hope, I can soon use my Pioneer in my new car, because the radio has a USB connection, which is very useful.
Bye from The Netherlands,
Branko.

Well this is the solution I have been waiting for. I have to install my head unit in my boot but want to be able to control the volume and also be able to swap between AUX IN and Radio. I do not need to be able to do anything else. At first I was going to extend the face plate up to the front of my car but this has proved extremely difficult. So this I hoped would be the answer.
However, I have just bought a stereo 3.5mm jack for my Pioneer DEH-30MP and plugged it into the W/Remote socket. I then connected a 2.2k resistor between the tip and sleeve parts of the jack plug, but nothing happened.
Am I doing something wrong???
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Hello Ray,
Perhaps a bit "silly" question of me, but did you connect the jack to the right hole?
My Pioneer has two 3.5mm holes at the back. I believe the other one is for AUX.
I do not doubt your skills, but the holes on my Pioneer don't have a very clear text which hole has which function.
Success!

Thanks for the reply mate. Yeah, I did connect it to the correct hole. I did think of that yesterday so double checked already. There was talk a little bit back in this thread about connecting 5v. Does this mean I need to connect 5v to the jack plug also?
If not, I don't suppose anyone know where I could buy a remote control for this head unit. This is the only cable I have left to run before I can start to put my car back together, lol
