No, I did not connect 5V! With my radio (Pioneer DEH P7900UB) I only connect te tip and sleev via a resistor (5 different ones) and I got the 5 functions.
Success!

I still can not get this to work. All I need to be able to do is control the Source function of the stereo so I can swap between AUX IN and Radio from the drivers seat when the stereo is in the boot.
Any ideas???

I now have installed my radio with a new facial adapter. So I finally can enjoy CD and USB music input.
I only need to connect the remote factory control to the radio.
I have measured the resistors in the remote control and they seem to be quit different.
Now I have to find a way to open the remote control and change the resistors.
First I have to see how I can get the remote control out of the steering wheel.
I will keep you informed.

Does anyone kow if the SONY RM-X2S stick remote is compatible with a Pioneer HU? I'm clutching at straws here, but all I need is to be able to select between Radio and AUX IN remotely.
I don't even mind if I need to buy a new HU that has both wired remote and aux input if anyone could suggest one or two. I can't seem to find any.

I finally got it working on my Mazda Premacy!
I had to modify my remote steering wheel controller: other resistors and some rewiring.
Before I started building the whole thing in my car, I had made a print with resistors for 5 funtcions. I tried it on my car radio on my desk (still not in my car at that time). It worked.
Than I modified the remote controller and build the whole thing, including my radio in the car and......nothing happened....the controller didn't work! pffff :-(
I measured the different resistances when pushing the controller buttons and they all seem to be okay. I checked the jack....also okay....I really didn't know, where possibly could be the problem.
Than after half an hour searching, I tried a last thing: I swapped two wires , so the resistors came on another position in the wiring (with still the same resistance numbers between tip and sleeve of the jack).
Amd now, it worked!

Glad you managed to get it to work mate. I'm still really struggling to get any response out of my HU. Maybe I am connecting it wrong. Probably doing something really stupid.
This is basically how I have it connected. I am just basically shorting out a 2.2kohm resistor between the tip and sleeve, but nothing seems to be happening.

Hey Ray,
That's exactly how I connected in the test environment and with my radio it worked great.
Did you connect all the wires of the radio (and I specially mean the several + wires (red and yellow, normally))?

Yes mate. The stereo is in my boot working fine. I just plugged the ISO coonector straight into my ISO to BMW adaptor. The HU works perfectly, I just cant get the jack plug to work.
I thought maybe the resistor was duff, but it measured out at exactly 2.2kohm. Might try another value tonight. Maybe 4.4 or 6.6k.

Hey Ray,
Perhaps a silly question, but I am thinking of how to solve this; it is a challenge for me too :-)
Does the source switching work on your head unit?
I know, on my Pioneer, I have to turn on the AUX1 in the options, otherwise, the source function skips the AUX1.
But now I am thinking of it, with your radio and controller, it also does not change to the different radio wavelengths, does it (FM, AM...)?
Have you already tried other functions with other resistors?

Thanks for your continued help mate. I have already turned on the AUX option in the menu. I can manually switch between radio - cd - aux using the source select on the HU with no problems.
I have not as yet tried any other resistor values, only the 2.2k as this is the main one I need. Volume + and - would be nice but not essential as I can control that from Centrafuse. As soon as I get home from work I will try a few other values.

Well, I just tried a few different resistor values and still nothing. Begining to think it will never work.
Can anyone suggest another way of being able to control the 'source' and volume from the front of my car???
If not, can anyone suggest another HU that comes with aux in and a hard wired remote???

I am sorry, that it doesn't seem to work out for you....
If I got another idea, I will let it know.
Good luck with finding another way....
Branko.

Hello,
I am planning to build my own steering wheel controls, and this thread was just what I needed!
Today I measured out the jack. seems like it's 2x5V DC. Using the base of the jack as negative.
I have tried some resistors with succes! connecting between the base and the tip if the jack. What the center part does I'm not very sure...
Anyway, It works! Now I just need to go and buy some right resistors. I will try the Ohm values from this thread.
Thanks to everyone!

I will go and buy a potentiometer tomorow 0-100k Ohms
starting from 0 ohm all the way to 100k ohm. In steps off 1k ohm
I think that will do the trick.
