Yeh I've done mine, changed them to orange - looks pretty sweet now it matches the glow from the rest of the car.
You will need 6x 603 SMD Led's and a hot soldering iron

I use it every day as a mouse & it's decent...
Actually, if you mess around with the sensitivity adjustment, the dead zones and the min/max settings, it's pretty easy to isolate the movement and be sure that moving the control in one axis doesn't affect the others. I have it working really well as a mouse in one layout and and as key commands in JRiver Media Center.

Bringing this thread back up... Saw there was some progress on isolating the axis'... can this unit be used like the iDrive except where pushing/tilting the knob would replace the four buttons?

I've written some software with some help from others on the boards here. It basically intercepts the inputs from the space navigator, and will perform various actions based on the input, including gestures. Check my sig for a download link.
It's actually fairly sophisticated, but it's complex to configure and consequently not many people have adopted it. It got a bit sidelined since I adapted it to take mouse input as the result of another consulting gig I was working which required mouse input (gestures mostly) to trigger actions as a proof of concept.
I do have a config utility, which I haven't really completely banged out, but should upload and document it a bit better.
Sadly, I'm currently busy with another consulting gig, so it may be a bit longer before I can get back focused on this, but I'll be certain to try again soon.
For perspective, I STILL haven't gotten this thing installed in my truck with the rest of my carpc.

well Mike (Malcom2073) hooked me up with an led swap from the factory blue to red. I did not have to dye or sand the blue ring to come up with this result...

That looks really good. I wouldn't mind changing the color on mine. Can you pass along any tips or part numbers?
Thanks
Hans

you'll need at least 6 smd 463 leds.. should probably be rectangular shaped. I would SINCERELY recommend getting at least 10 though.. they are extremely small and easily get lost. Only other things you need are a high power soldering iron, a thin tip, and a very steady hand.

i dont know the diameter unfortunately. In my case the metal base has been removed and the space navigator sits in a hole with hot glue underneath

That was one of the more difficult things I've had to solder, so definitely get at least 10. Just the slightest bit of static electricity is enough to make them go fly across the table. (Or in my case, the hood of a car)

Without the metal part of the space needed (the hole) is less?

yes.. the base is nothing more than a weighted bottom. Removing it makes the diameter and height smaller.
