Thanks, those two knobs took about 5 minutes to design so it was a pretty rough concept. The main idea is to get the general proportions right then make it feel appropriate in your hand. The way I design them they could either be machined or injection molded so we have options to evaluate prototype units. I don't have any programming skills, so all I can offer is my mechanical engineering skill and try to help everyone get a knob that they like.

If anyone has any special requests I'd be glad to model it and see how much it would cost to make.

I've sent models to my brother to render in Maya but never tried from Maya to SolidWorks. What software are you using to create the .obj's? I can import directly from Rhino, AutoCAD, IGES, Step, Catia, ProE and a whole bunch more. Whatever you are using probably has an output that's compatible with what I'm using.

That's definitely an option. I modeled those knobs from the quick look I had at the line art drawings. I'd be glad to make whatever people want. For my knob, I'd like to have the flutes down the length and have a wider base so I can rest my hand on it but I haven't determined exactly how big I'd like and all that. I'll probably make the one I like the best and have extras made then make whatever the other popular choices are.

I know what I ultimately would want mine to look like, the Mercedes is closest, if I get a chance I'll sketch it... what would it cost to make a few knobs or buttons even? just the though of having custom knobs & buttons made from a sketch kinda turns me on

I'm working on a deal with a local machine shop so I can get a basic price for each "style" of knob. That way, I don't have to call them every time we make a minor change to what we think we want. I should have base pricing the first half of next week.

So how hard will it be to write a simple driver for this to send keystrokes based off of movement of the wheel. Already put in my order for one... cant wait to start playing around with it.

Any FE that has either SDK/API support or keyboard hotkey support, should in theory be usable, the way to go about this i think would be to create a driver/tools that you can define these "bumps, stops, hills and so on" and then map that to either API functions or keyboard presses, for RR i would love to see something that is aware of the current screen type and then be able to change definitions of the encoder setup on that basis.

Actually i think alot of the basic work is done for integrating this device, as many of the Input devices have projects ongoing to integrate them using HID drivers (which i suspect this device will be seen as by the O/S), one of those is the Spacenavigator from 3dconnexion
