heh.. i'll be mounting the ipod in an accessable location and using it as my interface/display. what i need is the opposite of what you're describing. i need the ipod to control a relay... not a relay/button to control the ipod

Well, it just might be possible to use that screen as the Arduino supports SPI protocol, but I'm starting to get out of my depth at this point... The manual (which has to be the slowest download I have seen for years) mentions a serial interface. If that is useable, it will be easy, but there is code for SPI and I2C on the Arduino Playground.

Only just seen this thread - but what about:

1) Commandlfusion iviewer for IPOD Touch
2) PC and/or Global Cache with IR and relay outputs

Why? - in this scenario, the Ipod Touch can control devices without a PC, and it can control the PC (think of remote interface) too.

that iviewer is perfect for the interface! thanks. the global cache on the other hand is $300... i think i'll pass on that though... but i can use some my original idea with the iviere (i think) tony g you helped me out again!

just another option. dtmf decoder chip could work too. haven't figured out the details but it would work based on tones that you would get from a touch tone phone:

another update:

looks as though ir frequencies used in remotes range between 38khz-50khz, so it should be inaudible.

i just contacted simerec to see if i could hook up the audio out wire from the ipod doc connector straight to the vss pin. they are looking into it and will get back to me in a few days.

ok... even more research and i think i've come up with another solution. this is more expensive but more versatile:

first start out with a hacked la fonera as a wireless bridge

connect it to an then ethernet realy board

then use the iphone's wifi remote control features to control the board
