Power your laptop/mobile device wirelessly- (Wireless Power Induction)

This is the next soon to be big craze for mobile devices. Some of you may have already seen these posts throughout the internet and this solution is still in it infancy. I preordered a evaluation unit. This is already done in Japan with the Wii Remote and I can't wait for that to hit the US. I plan wo use this for powering my EEEPC CarPC. This may be another enhancement to my work in progress. See my project post:http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/work...box-mount.html

Check it out!

Interesting to see this technology actually being deployed over 100 years after it's discovery:

Nicola Tesla also had an obsession with trying to power things wirelessly...

And he also observed unusual signals that he later thought may have been evidence of extraterrestrial radio communications coming from Venus or Mars.

Tesla suceeded with the broadcast power, one of his many achievements:

Yep this is definitely far from a new idea..going back to the 1800's. It's just nice to finally see this moving along and soon to consumers.

Japan already has this for the Wii Remote which is the other thing I need because I use the Wii remote in my car.

Isn't the efficiency rate for this close to 1%?

^ i dont know if its that low but im sure its horrible or more things would use this as it would be a huge solution for many things like outlets for home theater etc. and in our cars efficiency is very important.

One problem I see with this is safety.

In a house, if your laptop catches fire or something, usually a saftey device (breaker) in your house will flick off, with this, I can't see that happening.

This is indeed a very old technology.

My Braun Electric Toothbrush gets charged inductively... NO electrical contacts!

But I'd imagine the efficiency is pretty low. This may be a good replacement for mobile chargers, but taking it to laptops may be very lossy on the efficiency front.

there are even a few cordless phones that use inductive tech to recharge the handsets, great way to make a device waterproof

I'm now thinking of all the electromagnetic field in such a room, and I don't feel very comfortable.

The biggest problem I see is getting a frequency from the FCC. Microwaves, cell phones, routers, portable phones, all these things work on certain frequencies like 2.4ghz or 5.4ghz. There may be better frequencies they'll work on but it's illegal to create anything that works outside that because those frequencies have been specially allocated for these types of devices by the FCC and they monitor that very closely. So if a company did succeed with this technology, they would have to apply to get their own frequency for the devices or work on the same frequency as some of the other stuff causing interference in certain applications. That's why portable phones, microwaves and routers don't play nicely together when they're all running on the same frequency.

Hello All, Kind of new to the forums, but this caught my interest so I thought I would post.

While it does seem to have some potential in some environments, overall, I don't forsee this being something that I would want because of it's gross inefficiency.

As for Mr. Tesla, there was a great documentary about him on the History channel. I am a forever Electrical Engineering student so I was telling my two younger brothers about him years ago. Thomas Edison was a thief. Kids are taught that Edison created modern electricity when that isn't the case. Edison even electricuted an elephant and other animals to discredit AC in 1903 in a park in New York.

For all of his good things he was slightly psychotic too, which most geniuses turn out to be. Must be why I have Delusions of Grandeur

Anyway sorry for the history lesson
