q's regarding relay also opus psu

Hi Guys,

I'm in the process of my second car pc build but this time rather than using a desktop pc i have acquired a toshiba tecra m2 laptop and would like to use that, but have a couple of questions for yee old wise ones as i couldnt find the info upon mucho searches.

1. can i modify/use my existing opus psu to power my laptop (15v 6amps) (particularly interested in this due to the built in startup/shutdown controller.

2. if not i was thinking of using a std laptop car charger connected to a switched cigarette lighter socket. But i would prefer to take it straight to the car battery (in the trunk) so would like to know how to wire up a relay? I have a switched 12v source in the trunk and was thinking of using this relay:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=37526

but how would i wire it up?

i would then use the app (cant remember by whom it was made) to set the laptop to hibernate once ac power was disconneted. For the time being i am happy to power it up manually.

thanks in advance.

Amo (UK)

1 - It depends on the voltage requirements of the laptop. If the laptop requires 12vDC, then you could use the Opus, but it's a kluugey setup, at best. In order to use the SSDC, you have to open the laptop to access the power switch. You would lose all portability of the laptop by doing so.

lol im not ready to let it go yet....i was thinking of going down the carnetrix route but my latop requires 15v and therefore i would require a dedicated car charger as the carnetrix only provides 18v lowest on the primary rail and 12v highest on the secondary.

in which case it will only be as useful to me as the opus i.e as a startup/shutdown controller for the laptop and as a switched 12v for the laptop car charger.
