its been 6 months or so. To the best of my memory, yes, it looked like that. BUT: You should be absolutely POSITIVE which wires are which before you hook stuff up and risk frying/destroying your expensive toys

Maybe you can take it to an Ace Hardware or something and have them test it with a better volt meter.

so on your carnetix output. there are 2 red wires. you connected them together and then connected it to the middle of the laptop cable? how/where did you connect the ground wires from the carnetix

Inverters work, sure. They're also highly inefficient, they generate excess heat and are more likely to introduce noise into the audio system.
