Those with Samsung Q1 or similar UMPC, can they handle this w/900Mhz Celeron + 1GB?

Looking to run these items and I want to make sure the Q1 or other units can handle it with their limited CPU power...

MP3 Audio w/Visualizations
DVD Video
CoPilot or iGuidance Nav
Roadrunner front end
and VAG-COM OBDII software

I understand it will not be as fast as my home PC or anything like that, but I really want a simpler solution and I want to make sure that the 900mhz Celeron CPU is up to the task... Ram will be 1GB for sure. Thoughts?

Too expensive for what it is! I think building a proper car computer will be cheaper and easier!

Remember the battery on the UMPC does not last very long!

Well I bought a 1Ghz Pentium M until with 1GB Ram and 60GB hard drive for $700, thought that was a pretty good price said and done. Just need to get an external DVD ROM for around $50, few cables- another $50. All done for $800.

Not to worried about the battery only because it will almost always be plugged in, battery only used when power to the car is off.

So I have been running a Samsung Q1 in my Electron Blue Corvette for close to a year. CPU Power is not an issue. All noraml software runs great (iGuidance, MS Streets and Trips, media player, etc.) I am a fan of Media Engine (and run it on my other car computer in the red vette) but it does not run correctly on this tablet becuase of the mutiple resolutions that are soft selectable and Media Engine has problems in that area on my machine.

I wrote my own Audio player in TCL to have large button controls on the touch screen.

With no optical drive, there is no DVD playing as such. You can rip and convert DVD as you would to view them on the iPod or iPhone and play them on the Q1 using iTunes or Qucik time (or purchase movies from iTunes store).

The problem with using the Q1 in the car is mounting, managing power and the cables. I made up my own bracket, purchased a LEND DC to DC power supply and fabbed a relay control, and added a Peripheral’s AUX2CAR unit with the PXHGM4 adapter cable to pipe audio input directly into the head unit.

Anyway, in my opinion the Q1 is an amazing piece of engineering (a complete computer with touch screen, with Bluetooth and 10/100 Ethernet ports, USB2 ports, etc in a nice small package). And yes you can cruise the internet from your car in cities that muni-wifi while you are driving.

Just tested mine with a 2GB stick of PC5300 ddr2 and the bios recognised it and worked perfectly! Just went up a long way in my book!

To give you precise technical terms for a memory upgrade:

1: Flip the Q1 onto its front (ideally put a towel down)

2: Locate and remove the 6 screws (1x per corner, 1x above the stand, 1x underneath the stand)

3: Open the LAN & VGA port protectors

4: DEEP BREATH...pry the rear of the chassis off, it comes off fairly easy tho it can get caught so be careful!

5: You are now presented with the nekkid arse of your Q1, pop the old stick of ram out, and fit a nice 2GB PC 4200 (533mhz) or PC 5300 (667Mhz) stick into the slot.

6: Put it all back together in the reverse of the above

7: Turn it on, and check the BIOS to confirm 2048MB (F2 on the keyboard)

8: If all goes to plan, watch Vista boot and respond a damn sight better! (And give the origami experience a try if you haven't)

I don't have my Q1 yet - been trying to decide if it will do all that I want, but i'm leaning in that direction and this will certainly help the performance.

i have a samsung q1 running media engine and a trial of street deck, it runs perfect except for phone control keeps shuting down for some reason so i use sprint dialup networking to get net access screen res is fine for me at 800X640 which is set to match media engine (again sorry for posting so late) lol

oh and my q1 includes 40g hdd 512 ram and xppro not tablet (my choice) a 160g usb hdd
