Hey everyone, this is my first post! I have a 2003 mazda6s and a eee pc. I joined this website cause i was searching if anyone else was using the eee and what they were doing with it...

You guys are really making me wish I would have waited for the black one to come out!

p309, what is the mount your using for yours?

Are you guys sticking with linux or running windows?

Thanks!

robcole84- the little mount that you see is a cdplayer holder that I got from buy dot com for about 15 bucks. It's acceptable, but the 2lb eee is ALMOST too much for it. If I had to do it again, I'd go with one built for a laptop.
For a TON of info on the ASUS eeepc, you should check out eeeuser.com -- if you haven't already.
Have fun, it really is an amazing little laptop for the price.

MONITOR: I would recommend you use an external touchscreen monitor. the eee is a laptop, and one of the biggest advantages of a laptop as a carPC is the ability to use/configure/upgrade/etc it outside of the car. if you hack up the eee, you'll lose that ability. but of cost is your deciding factor, then adding a touchscreen to the eee itself would be the cheapest option.

OPERATING SYSTEM: for carPC use, windows XP is widely preferred as the OS of choice. but it depends on what you need your carPC to do...

if it will just be doing audio and video, then the default Xandros Linux will be fine. it even provides a nice "big-button" front end for you to use. if you want to run good GPS software, etc, then you'll have to switch to windows. (although they are improving, there are currently no good GPS solutions for Linux).

I have a 2007 mazad 3. I now have my EEE pc up and running as a carputer. Its in the glovebox and I use my phone for an internet connection. I just finished the installation. I still have a lot more work to do as only audio, video, and gps works in road runner right now.I'm working on phone control and alot of other good stuff.

With the thing not supplying power, the sound is actually pretty good. I'm not an audiophile, I guess.
I'll study and search on different methods of supplying the eeePC with external power in a vehicle. Thanks again for the suggestions.

Use a ground loop isolator to elimanate engine noise and interferance!

I love how the displays are red.... i wish American cars were creative and had displays like that! Anyways nice setup, I seem the EEE fits in the glove box with room to spare!

I soldered 2 wires to the power switch on the mobo and ran them to a switch in a convenient location. I just push the switch to start it (i don't like the idea of it auto turning on when my car comes on, sometimes i might not want it on)

Cool, thanks-- I may do something similar-- is it obvious which are the right wires for the switch (my eee hasn't arrived yet)?

take the eee apart. locate the power switch. There are 5 (i think) different places where the power switch is soldered to the board. Touch two of them together with a wire, repeat until it turns on. Those are the two that you need to solder the external switch to.
