laptop ram question

ok guys i know this is a carpc forum but I have a question about my laptop ... i just bought a 4 gb ram pack from newegg (pc2-5300 if you're wondering) anyway ... got it installed and my computer reads it as 2.99 GB ram ... any idea why this is??

Im so confused??

xp sp2 cant read ram over 2.73 gb, same with vista....
until vista sp1 comes out and xp sp3 then they can read upto 4gb

to elaborate on what john said...

in a 32 bit desktop operating system the maximum memory you can have is 3gb - 3.5gb depending on the situation.

if you have 64 bit operating system, you're good to go but a 64 bit operating system requires 64 bit hardware and drivers.
