there are way to many possible answers for a question like this... any one answer is just going to be one persons opinion & subjective really anyway... it's much more practical for you to search & look at some of the many different cards used than to expect the many to come to your thread & bring you this info....

Check out the Sound Blaster Audigy 2 NX for a laptop

I use a USB SB Audigy 2 NX with my IBM R51 laptop and it works great. It has 4-channels and bass output, with great software to set it up. However, if you want to use KX Project drivers, this hardware will not work. This software will give better sound (so I have heard) but this card sounds way better than any other USB card I have tried yet.

Good luck

Still will argue that SB Audigy is a good option

I agree that some USB sound cards are problematic, but what other options do you have when using a laptop?

I had the a Phillips Aurillium, which sounded fine, but output too low a volume to work with my setup without distortion. I also had the less expensive SB Live!, which sputtered and had problems, mainly because it was USB 1.1

I stand by the Audigy 2 NX as a good choice. I have never had a problem with it. However, I am running a Pentium Mobile 1.6Ghz and 768MB ram, which is pretty fast for a carputer.

Worse comes to worse, buy it, try it, and if not satisfied, return it or sell it on eBay.

Good Luck

I am running at 2.0 GHZ and 1gb of ram, so the sputtering continues...

Not that this option is up your alley, because of price, but if you were to go with a USB optical device, such as the turtle beach audio advantage micro like I have. You would be able to produce 5.1 sound in conjunction with a receiver/EQ like the Alpine PXA-H701 w/ RUX-C701. Also the Alpine EQ/processor drives the amplifiers before going to your speakers. That is currently how I am using my notebook with my new configuration that I'm setting up.

Price drawbacks as I mentioned earlier: the Alpine products are aprox $800-900 retail or $500-600 possibly on ebay, the need for an optical cable $30-100, Plus various cost for Amplifiers and speakers combinations.

It may be a lot, but I get exellent quality sound that way and I sure think it was well worth the investment.
