the laptop brand/model doesn't really matter unless there is something about it that is significantly different from other laptops. otherwise it doesn't matter if they are a toshiba, dell, sony, acer, etc. etc... they all hook up the same.

you don't hook up "power to the modem"... I assume you are referring to using the modem jack as a connector for a remote power switch?
you'll have to solder two thin wires onto the motherboard power switch/button leads (use a jumper wire or a multimeter to find out which leads to solder). then run those wires to your jack. on the other side of the connector (that plugs into your jack) you would hook up a momentary power switch.
personally, I would use a new jack (like a mini [headphone] jack or small barrel plug jack) and drill a hole in an unused space on the side of the laptop somewhere to mount it. but if you want to use the modem jack then that's fine as well. most laptops use a separate 'daughter board' for the modem/LAN jacks. you'll need to disassemble your laptop to access it. cut the wires (or circuitboard traces) that lead to the pins on the modem jack that you want to use.
NOTE: if they make a docking station for your laptop that has a power button on it, then it may be much easier to wire a remote switch to that instead of hacking your laptop
