Collection of known laptops that work with Webmaster Auto-On Module

Hello all,

About a year ago I purchased Webmaster's Auto-On Module for my Toshiba Satellite 5105-S501. Some of you may have read the problems I ran into regarding my weirdo membrane power switch. I never did get it working correctly, but let it be known that it is through no fault of the module itself, but rather my laptop. I did get it to work a few times, but never permanently for some reason. What I wanted to do with this post was make a collection of laptops that work correctly with the Auto-On Module. It is preferred that any post be accompanied by pictures of the soldering to the power switch of your laptop.

I am looking to purchase a new laptop to use as a dedicated carputer, which is why I am making this post.

Again I would like to emphasize that I am more than happy with Webmasters product, it was my laptop that I was unhappy with. Naturally it had a power switch that was a little abnormal (just my luck).

So, for those of you that have had success - Please post Make and Model #'s of the laptop you have, and preferably a picture of the soldering to go along with it.

edited for more detail information (turbocad6) I will see if i got pics and make a spoonfed how to for all the laptops i get.

WORKSDell Latitude D600- The cover on the laptop where the power button is just pops off with a small screwdriver.
You can solder it to the power button.
WORKSdell D600 docking station- Disassemble the docking station to solder to the docking station power button.
Does the same thing except it will make it easier to remove the laptop in/out of the car.

WORKSHP 530 laptop- Top section of laptop where power button is removes when (6) screws are removed.
Solder the wires to the power button.

WORKSIBM A31- ONLY with a docking station because the IBM A31 has a ribbon power button.

I really like this idea... if we could build a database of install friendly laptops that would be great, even I sometimes just buy a laptop with my fingers crossed... doesn't have to be so dependant on the auto on module, as really any install friendly laptop should also be compatable with that, as well as other solutions...

I could start a sticky if we start to get some useful info here, anyone reading this, if you would take the time to list particulars of your laptop & stuff, we could then start to organize this into a nice resource for all, so, start adding to this please, I know the dell's are mostly friendly as far as power button is concerned, I can confirm the 700m, I also can confirm the gateways are install friendly, at least the few I've seen. I'll add more specifics & model #'s later but please, if anyone has anything to add, please do so here & we'll see what we can get together

works on a thinkpad T22/T23. took a while to figure out where to solder it but been working great w/ push button for 2 years and w/ webmaster's auto-on (that i made myself using his schematic) for a week now. I know my wires are ghetto but it works. Soldered 1 wire from the keyboard connection (on the mainboard) to the modem plug, and the second wire other from ground to the other pin of the modem plug.

Just finished mine 5 mns ago!

I built the turn on module myself following Webmaster´s ingenuous plan and...

it works like a charm!!!

I´m using a Toshiba Satellite M115 - S3144.

FIY : I previously was using a Toshiba Satellite P15 - S420 and it was working too.

I just tried and failed with a Thinkpad T41.

The power button contacts are buried in molded plastic bits that don't come apart. I was able to remove the button itself but couldn't get deeper. The ribbon cable is buried in the keyboad, which also doesn't come apart. The far end of the ribbon cable goes into a socket that's buried in a tight hole with molded plastic stuff around it. I might be possible to get to it, but I couldn't figure out how to remove the motherboard from the frame.

Just found this lol... sweet idea Ryan.

I've used it on a Dell D800 & D610 (thinks those are the right models. don't have pics though.) Also an HP, but I'll have to edit this and add the model later on.

Which screws? I just got one and I'm not sure where to start. Did you take the bottom off the laptop, or does the trim panel around the power button come off from above?

the trim panel comes off from above but the screws holding it are on the bottom on each side of the battery. Just looked at mine. 4 screws on the left and right on the bottom of the laptop on each side of the battery.

Thanks for your help. It took me a while to get around to it, but I dug into my HP530 last weekend and it is working well now. There's a little spot near the hinge to mount the jack, even. Having all of the cables (USB/VGA/Power/Jack) are on the same side of the laptop made for a pretty nice install.
