first build - clevo 2800t power options

hi,

im using a clevo 2800t laptop (branded viglen) 1.1ghz p3, 20gb hdd, 512ram in my volvo850se. i just received my 8" touchscreen thru the week and have been configuring the soft.

im now in a position to move the lappy & screen into the car and have been reading power options: i have a 12v laptop adaptor which ive been using for years - the volvo also powers off the ciggy socket when the car is switched off ... im sure ive seen a soft solution to enabling standby to switch the computer off/on with the car

but was wondering if a hardwire solution might prove more reliable?

naturally i dont wanna fry anything and have searched using keywords such as "power on from standby hibernate and ciggy" with far too many results to be useful.

A relay would do you nicely.
You setup the relay to be triggered by an ignition-contolled power line so that it will turn the power to the laptop off when you turn the ignition off.

the power cuts-off to the laptop on switching the ignition off - im more looking for pointers on what options are available on how to handle this 'feature'.

Most laptops have power settings to turn off the laptop (or put it into hibernate or whatever) if it is on battery for a certain amount of time.

So by using a simple relay controlling the power to the laptop with the ignition, you can set the laptop to stay running on battery for 10 minutes, for example. That will leave the computer on long enough to fill your gas tank or run into the store for a soda, but still not leave it on long enough to drain the laptop battery.
