Remotely startup laptop...? (wake on lan)??

Hi..

I'm thinking of using my laptop for my carputer .. stored under a seat or in the boot..

Now the issue is I don't want to have to reqwire the power button, as i its not my laptop so I can't stuff around with it too much.

I was thinking that as the bios supports wake on lan, it may be easy to use a lan cable to start it up.. would anyone have any idea of if this would work.. and how?

yeah put a toggle switch on the lan cable, make shure you connect that switch to the yellow and the orange wires. It will work like a charm

Uhm - You know he's BS'ing you right - There is no Yellow wire in cat 5.

I dont think you will find any sort of switch solution for this. Im not positive, but fairly certin the Wake on lan standard uses the MAC address to send some 1's and 0's to the card. you cant emulate that with a switch.

Does the laptop have a wake on ring? You may be able to set wakr on ring on the serial port (as if you would be connecting an external modem) then put a switch on the ring indicator line.

Hes meaning you can't just put a switch on a lan connection, you have to actually have something on the network send a wake up packet, not something you can do with a simple switch. if you had a lot of time to burn I suppose you could biuld a small microcontroller and interface it to a lan card

It is too bad there isn't a way to hardwire that. You would think that some little piece of hardware would be made for servers that need WOL when the network is down. It would also be pretty need if you could run the WOL with a wireless card/bridge so that you would remote admin your carputer from a desktop inside.

Moose, Thanks for the link, it really got me thinking. Not that this will realy help "pro" but still -

If you have a PC that supports WOL, and you cable it to a Wireless access point like linksys wet11, or wap11 - you could ten remote power on your PC from anywhere on your wired /wifi network. of course , you would have to hard wire some power for the wap, (the wap11 is rated for 5vdc, 2 amps, but I doubt it draws that much)

Of course you could get a remote start unit for the car for about 75 bucks, and wire the pc to the ignition line. Maybe someone has a use for it...

Reviving an old thread:

I have successfully implemented a wake-up by wiring switched 12 volts to the ring indicator input on my COM port and enabling wake on modem in my PC bios. In my case, the switched 12 volts is initiated by my VW head unit.
