Tablet PC for in-car use?

A colleague has one of these, it's pretty nice except the touch ony works with the supplied stylus. Just saw these being cleared at ubid in case anyone is interested, could make a neat all-in-one car PC with the addition of a DVD and GPS. Easy to remove too..!

I'm using one as a remote control to control the PC installed in the car. Will allow me to do all the normal alarm type functions.

It works quite well, just a little slow on bootup. I'm using the Motion Computing M1400.

One car is running a custom Shuttle, the other is running a Dell Inspiron 8100. The tablet controls both car's computers and has fingerprint recognition for logging in so that someone else can't start the car, or work the goodies.

do you have any pics of your setup running? what processor do you have in the tablet PC? and why are you using the tablet pc as a big remote instead of being the car computer itself?

I use an HP TC1100 1Ghz tablet pc at work, and I have been eyeing one for myself as a car computer. at my work, they cost us around $2700 with the dock, CD burner, keyboard, mouse. when you add up the #s, it makes sense if you figure out out to install a hacked dock in your car, and you can just pick up and go with the whole computer unit with a 10" screen that is at 500 nits.

look into the Fujitsu Stylistic 3400/3500. not 1GHz, but a hell of alot cheaper than $2700. you can find them on ebay, 400/500MHz with dock, CD burner, keyboard, case, etc. for around $400-500.

I am aware of the Fujitsu ones around 400mhz. The Compaq one that is 800mhz Celeron is selling around $1000. I am currently using a 700mhz P3 laptop, so it will not be much of a jump really. just that the older units are not too happy with MS Office 2003 and Win XP Tablet PC edition as much. I plan to make it a dedicated unit for the car, but be able to de-dock and bring it with me to another car or whereever.

i'll never get the 1Ghz version below $1000

you two have any pics of your installs or no?

EDIT: I *finally* found a pic with one installed (no clue what language their forum is in):
