Tablet PC's

Do tablet PC's have a "VGA in port", this way I can hook up my carputer to the tablet (and use it as a monitor)

Smile Huh?!

No they don't...and why in the world would you hook up a FULL computer to ANOTHER full computer to use the monitor?

You already have a computer (the tablet PC), just use THAT as your car computer!

OK...here's the deal. I am an auto tech at a car dealer. I brought my own PC to work so I could look up Tech Bulletins, track my repair orders and more, like 8 Gigs of music)
I now want to put this PC in my truck. I was looking at the Lilliput for a display. but that leaves me without a pc at work. (which is really helpfull).
I am looking at eBay and saw this Simpad SL4 here: http://cgi.msn.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI...487763638&rd=1
I could use the Simpad at work to get online etc, then put it in the truck and use it as a display, use all the software (music etc.) from the "main" pc.
I'm just trying to find the cheapest way to do this while having the useage of a PC in my truck and at work.
Any ideas?

Sorry...nope.

Nope, no cheap way of doing that short of going back to square one:

A "Tablet PC mounted" in your truck or a "Touchscreen VGA LCD with PC".

And frankly that 339.00 is a rip off for a Windows CE based tablet PC, you can easily buy many parts required for a Car PC for that cost (minus the LCD of course) and use REAL WINDOWS XP.

i think some people just like saying no.

yes it can be done, but any touchscreen/digitizer control will not be intact without a USB touchscreen overlay (can be found for under $150). or you could just use a mouse/kb/touchpad connected to the main PC. there are PCMCIA cards ($50-150) that allow video-in. i don't know of any that allow VGA-in. you can get a VGA-to-video converter ($50-100?).

http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/sear...earchid=338409
http://www.digitalww.com/b3.htm

the prices i found are for new products, after minimal searching. i'm sure better prices are out there. especially if you look on ebay.

anything is possible.

edit- also, that Simpad is a bit too expensive for what you get. for the same price, you could get a much more powerful Fujitsu Stylistic. or, you could get the Stylistic 2300, which is slightly more powerful and has 2 PCMCIA, which will run XP and maxes out at 160mb RAM. look them up on ebay. there's a guy selling them maxed out for about $270, i think. that Simpad doesn't even seem to have a harddrive, wtf?

these guys have a good reputation, and some pretty good prices. http://jksalesinc.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=26 you will most certainly find better prices on ebay, though.

I guess it could be also done through a remote control software, such as RAdmin
The Tablet you are looking at is a rip-off. My Pocket PC runs Windows CE and it's twice as fast (cost me twice cheaper).
Buy a real tablet that runs XP. Here are some affordable options:
http://search.ebay.com/tablet_W0QQsa...sortpropertyZ3

With a wifi connection in your car, all you will have to do is fire up your trunk pc and then click twice to connect to it. You will have full control of your PC from your tablet (full-screen control that is) without wires. Basically it will feel like you have a wireless monitor

great minds think alike.

as i told muldrick in a PM, a program like tightVNC would let him control the main PC from the tablet, wirelessly even. i use tightVNC to control my server from my desktop. i haven't used RAdmin, yet. but i'm looking into it, now.

if by 'REAL' you mean 'NEW' then yes.

my Stylistic 2300 runs XP and all the software i need, and i only paid $100 for it.

if you wanna pay 20x the price for only 4x the power.. you go right ahead.

you need to quit sippin' on that haterade, y0.

Exclamation Yeah right!

$100? Yeah right. It runs Windows XP...for $100? The thing is a P233, I wouldn't call that "running Windows XP" properly.

I have a P233 with 128meg ram running WinXP as a File Sharing Server. It's up time is over the 250 day mark and I found it in the trash.

I just bought the Stylistic 3400 ( http://cgi.msn.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI...488426464&rd=1 )
I think it comes with win 4.0, I guess I can load XP on it? or what do ya'll think would be best?

I like the wifi idea, and may do that. It would be nice to do the install without all the wires.

What he is looking at is not a Tablet PC! It is a wireless thin client. It would work perfect for what he is suggesting (if you want video you may to do some research). The thin client has a built in touchscreen, ie, terminal emulation, wireless, OSK, RDP, and ICA. I have one at home controlling my medai server in the basement for distributing mp3 for whole house audio, videos and ripped DVD's through an RF modulator to all of my TV's, and video from my media server for my Home THeater!

I also have 6 of these type devices at work and RDP works great if i need to check email real fast while i'm working on a system out in the warehouse.

Sounds like a good idea. You could also use it to control your pc from several hundred feet away from your car!

Let me know if you have any specific questions on how to do any of this!!

and the nay-sayer says nay, again.

as far as the 3400 goes, you should be able to run XP on it. the Fujitsu site only shows drivers for W2K, but they should work with XP. the only thing you should really be concerned with is the pen driver.

after alittle searching... it doesn't seem to work, atleast not with the W2K driver. If you can get a copy of XP Tablet PC Edition, it will work. I'll ask around, though. the driver i'm using on my 2300 isn't intended for a 2300, but it works perfectly.

or, you could just use W2K. it will perform better anyway.
