I have somewhat the same question. I have an extra IBM 390X Laptop laying around and want to use that as my temporary carputer until I get enough money to build a normal carputer. I bought the Xenarc 700IDT as a screen.

But how do I get it to turn on if it is in my trunk? I heard about wake on ring and shorting out wires. Any step by step tutorials or an easy solution for a noob? I already figured out how to make it go in to hibernation automatically after my car turns off just need to figure out how to get it to turn back on. Switch, automatically, etc?

Before I sold my Thinkpad T20 I had an idea of using it as a carputer. I never came around to actually do it but I looked into this startup/shutdown issue using laptops. I found that the network interface in the T20 (3com mini-PCI I believe) supported WOL (Wake-on-Link). The NIC in my T41 laptop does not support this feature fully so it's pretty much a case-by-case issue wether the NIC support WOL or not.
Anyway, WOL works so that as long as the NIC has active link, the laptop runs as usual. Once the link goes down, the laptop goes to standby (by setting this in the power settings in XP). When the link goes active again, the laptop resumes from standby mode. I actually went out and bought components to build a relay that connects to the ignition and gives active link when ignition is on and disables the link when ignition is turned off. To test, just loop RxD and TxD pins in the ethernet port of the NIC, set the WOL and power settings and remove the loop. The laptop should now go to standby and when You loop it again it should resume.
I dunno wether the 390X has a built-in NIC but if not, I would recommend using a 3COM PCMCIA NIC as these cards seem to support WOL in most cases.

Sorry - but i've always wanted to do that!

It really depends on your specific laptop, your bios, and how you want it to work.

Do you want to wake it from S1, S2, S3, S4?

My laptop supposedly supports WOL, WOR,and WOUSB. I configured for WO USB but it kept cutting power to USB so it would not wake. (yes I set the option to not cut the power). I tested wake on ring but it did not work either. WOL seemed like a lot of work and I didn't have any faith that would work either. I finally decided soldering wires to power switch(there is no port replicator for my laptop) was best for what I wanted anyway.

Wiring to power switch wakes laptop from all standby states, from hibernate and will turn it on from off. Also I can hit the switch and the laptop will go to standby. I wired laptop power switch to 1/8 audio connector that I put where the port replicator connector would have been - so I can disconnect and take laptop out of the car easily.

All The information is out there if you search. You need to determine what is best for you and what can be implemented on your laptop.

Good Luck!!

Hehe,

Here's something weird.

My laptop (Dell Latitude L400) has a Wake On-Modem Ring, but it's disabled in the BIOS. If I can get this enabled, is there a way that I could use this for my autostart?

Peace,

Rafster

I believe you need a line emulator, ring generator or other circuit to produce the approx. 90vac 20-60hz ring signal.

jeese like half this thread's words were "NOOB".... hm... it IS the newb forum though...

Searching isn't always best, otherwise forums would have no point b/c people would have to look instead of specialized help... and people (cough the guys that half their posts are just negative "NOOB" accusations (^^^) would have.. well... less posts to brag about!!!

lmao thats my two-cents..

But seriously I'm going to try and use a laptop and it took me 20 minutes to find info thats half-way worthwhile.

lmao... i dunno I just felt compelled to say this
