Wake on LAN is an extremely poor standard. Some laptops support it, others don't. If your just talking about waking up from standby, most will have some support for it, but they usually have to be activated in windows. If you goto the network card properties in device manager under the advanced tab, you should find wake up capabilities. It should be set. You may also have to set some property in the BIOS.

Additionally, many laptops can be woken up from hibernate or from a completely powered off state. This is very much hit or miss how well it works between laptops though. On my dell laptop, WOL works great if you don't remove power to the laptop when its off, if you remove and restore power, it wont remember to wake up with the lan packet. On the other hand, my fujitsu lifebook works incredibly well, it will actually draws power from the network cable to listen for WOL and work even if the laptop is not plugged into the wall.

This is true. Easy way to tell how laptop behaves when power is disconnected is to just open network properties (Windows), unplug and replug power cord and see what happens. At least this was how I checked the support.

Ya, I would assume that it takes power to keep the lan card awake listening... I'm looking to keep minimal draw on my battery while in standby.

Good point. Next I´m going to try how long the battery will last (with my laptop) and if the laptop will still wake up when the battery is drained completely (in car the laptop will get DC power in startup) and if it still will remember to wake up.

Just tested the router/laptop setup in car. Laptop woke up from standby like charm. On my laptop the battery can hold up to 64 hours in standby mode. Works for me.

I just got my GL today. I flashed the firmware to the mini first (like the doc says) then to the standard firmware. I found where you do the WOL but there is no place to "input" code. I tried everything. Probably not using the best of laptops to try either... I hate my Sony Vaio, but I don't want to go pull my toshiba out of the car.

Anyways. How did you set it up using that dd-wrt firmware? Or did I miss read and you did the other firmware? And if so maybe you can answer some other questions I have like, what you input for the boxes.

Also, how are you guys hooking this up in your car? I'm guessing since it's just 12v, you hook it up to the battery, but I could be wrong.

I'm really confused... because I could have sworn that there was Wake on Lan or wake on ring or something for my Toshiba Satellite A45-S120 but in the BIOS.... I can't find anythign... Not one thing for this. And I thought there were, I even upgrade the BIOS and still nothing (actuallly looks the same so i don't know what the point was) But can someone help me out on that?

I just flashed the mini since the router is only a "start up switch".

For power I use a simple DC-DC transformer (don´t lnow if this is the right term for the device).

Don´t know about toshiba, but did you check your windows settings first? (assuming ypu are running windows).

Ok, so here's my dilemma. My sony works no problem... kinda cool actually. But it's a powerhouse and completely over kill for my car. It overheats frequently and I've been spending more money on my Toshiba, car adapter, etc. I found where the WOL setting was on my Toshiba, but the problem is that it doesn't supply power to it when the computer is in stand by. I"ve searched high and low, but can't find any possiblities.

I wouldn't have a problem using the sony if it didn't need so much power, it drains pretty fast in standby or anything. And this Toshiba isn't any older than the sony, (actually newer if i remember right) And I can't believe that it doesn't support a great feature like wake on lan... but what ever. Maybe another idea?

Did you check your NIC settings in windows (Power management)? Is the "Allow this device to bring up the computer out of stand by." checked? Did you check that your NIC settings are same with AC and DC power?

Well, neither of those options are in the power management... and I don't even see them on the vaio so i'm hoping i still have some luck. But I did see it on the nic settings, I remember that. But nothing of the same for the toshiba, I just went and downloaded the actual driver from intel's site, intel pro/100 ve, and it has a lot more options with it, and even a WOL option where it didn't before... and what is "wake on link"? there is that option with the toshiba drivers.

It's such a nice router and I don't really want to send it back, but so far, it's looking like the case.

for now... in the cold it will not last as long, and depending on the type of battery, they really don't take constant cycling super well... I would worry that after a year the battery would last little to no time, but thats just my opinion on what I had seen with laptop batterys when I used to sell laptops.

I got this working too with my laptop and a linksys wrt54g v3.1 router.

But a couple of questions:
1. Is it not possible to wake up laptop from hibernate with WOL in any way?
2. Where in the router settings can you setup the router as a client ?

3.(noob) If I use a relay with the ignition as a trigger, to power a touchscreen, laptop charger, and the router how do I split the power cords after the relay to power up everything?
