does a laptop boot without its native lcd?
Hey,
I did a search, but I couldn't locate anything on this. Will an older laptop from eBay with only a busted screen work with my external touchscreen monitor, after I disconnect it from the laptop motherboard? Does the motherboard have to sense a LCD laptop screen?
Thanks
Scott

Why not just leave it connected, though it probably will boot, just like a Desktop computer will bott with out a monitor attached.
And just so you know, the fact that you got it from Ebay isn't gonna change wether it will boot or not without the screen attached.

Good point. I did get a cheap Toshiba from ebay, that the dude guaranteed would boot. I removed the screen, and was able to view the bios with my touchscreen, but with my HD (Windows XP) and my RAM I cannot get the laptop to boot. I get the dreaded blue screen of death. I was just trying to rule out the possiblities. I only paid 60 bucks for it, so I am not at to much of a loss.
I was also thinking if I have to push the power button every time to turn it on, I want a fast way, not opening up the busted LCD, and pushing the button. To bad, there is no docking station available for this model. I might be ebay'n (selling) this.

Sounds like there is some other issue. You don't mention if you just dropped in a hard drive into the laptop from other source, because if you did, that could cause your BSOD. You should do a clean install of XP with the HD in the laptop.
As for starting the laptop, search the boards. It is a VERY COMMON question, how do I start and shutdown a laptop seems to be asked almost daily, and there are several options listed on this board, and they don't all require a docking station.
Search, and ye shall find.

I do think there is something else I am missing. But since I am no computer wiz, just learn on the fly, I'll pass on this one. As far as power options go, I was just hoping to get a laptop for cheap, one that boots to windows, then I'd worry about the power options. I have done a lot of searching on that (thanks to this board), so I know my options.
Thanks for the help everyone.

Yes it does..... Look at my Install page (In My Sig....)
Peace,
Rafster
P.S. You might have to press FN F4 or something like that to get your VGA output to turn the screen on. Sometimes depeneding on the laptop, you can go to the BIOS and have it use the VGA connection automatically on startup...)
