Will most laptops power on without battery?
First off, I do at least have the AC adapter, I'm not hoping for free energy.
I just aquired this HP Pavilion n5415 and it has no battery. I have a Thinkpad here that will turn on without the battery in, anyone know if this one should too? Just tring to figure out where my troubleshooting should begin.

Yeah I can get one at a descent price, but the laptop won't turn on I kinda thought it should. Time to crack it open and see what I can see. Might not be worth the trouble of a new motherboard.

when you plug the ac adapter in do any of the status lights come on. I've had several.. and with all of them you could either see or hear power being applied.

Nope. The light on the power supply comes on, but nothing on the computer.

no whine no lights.. nothing happening with power button is pressed. Sounds like there's another problem.

I assumed there would be when I got it. They didn't know anything about it. Worst case scenerio, I may have to mold this 14" into my dash.

That aint worth it, laptop monitors require special controlers and stuff. If it doesn't boot or gain power, the thing is worthless unless you can fix it.

Buy a battery on ebay...
Worst case scenario, you can part out the laptop on Ebay for a profit...
Peace,

My HP Pavilion zt-1135 WILL power up from the adapter without a battery installed (or with a dead one). I agree that something else is wrong.

I checked the that, it's at 2.something v which is lower than that of a desktop but it is different battery and I'm not sure what the voltage should be. I completely pull the thing apart and there is nothing obviously damaged. I may look into both batteries a bit more. I can also get the power button board for pretty cheap, may try one of those. I don't think I can get a mobo for this thing for less than $100 and if I end up needing that, I'll just part it out on ebay.
