Why laptop? get tablet or convertablet. Im using convertablet by Acer, mayby not your best choige but has worked acceptably. Prob is though port replicator for acer models wont do ****, it has too short cable to plug in tablet and hide in car... Big plus is though that they have lightweight tablet sleevebags, so u can easily take it away from car with u, without worrying looking too dork...

I'm also using a tablet and mounting it to my dash. Click the link in my signature (below) to check out what i've done.
In terms of ease of setup, you can not go wrong with a tablet. it's the perfect all in one solution for someone that doesnt wanna hack their interiors up, spend tons of money on parts, worrying about power sources, etc.
craigslist (the nyc one) lately has had some awesome deals on laptops. if anything, i would get like an older laptop (p3 1ghz and above) and just buy a lilliput 7" touch screen to putput the video to. that'd be the second "cleanest" setup that you can do and price-wise, it wouldn't be so bad. honestly, the touch screen monitor would be more expensive than a p3/p4 laptop via craigslist.
me? i wanted a huge screen up front which is why I use my tablet. F$ck spending $800 on a 10" touch screen. my 12.1" touch screen lights up my interior at night and everyone in surrounding cars or suv's pulls up to my doors and sneaks a peek.... DON'T THINK I DON'T NOTICE!
OWNED! ;]

Whenever I'm about to park my car (lets say im going to taco bell) i "undock" the tablet from my mount and just throw it under my seat. i hide the audio wire that i feed to it and that's it. if someone looks inside my car, they dont see a thing.
the other thing i do, since my laptop is purely black in color, is i put on the floor of the rear seats... why? the rear windows on my car are tinted and you cant see the floorboard from the front untinted windows. if someone looks in to the back windows, they just see black - nothing shiny or anything like that.
I do this maybe at the light (or second light) before my destination. When I am parking my car, i take the tablet with me!
I thought about making a semi hidden area to put the tablet... we'll see what I come up with ;]

Wouldn't want to carry this around when i'm at the beach or not at home. I figure that if I have mine built in with old parts i have laying around, if it gets stolen I won't worry about it. Plus, I don't want all the attraction that a huge lcd would give me. The more ppl who know you have a tablet in your car the bigger chance ppl would break into your car, no matter how hard you try to hide it.

Not to get too off topic, I had to take my father to the hospital the other day (he's ok now), I noticed the EMTs had tablet PCs, hanging from their belts.
Looked to be about a 7"-8" screen. Very good visibility, at first I was like, what is that? At first glance, the screen looked like a piece of paper.

The ones I saw were small. There was some "handle" to either side of the screen. 1,1 1/2" maybe. Sort of like a bigger, industrial PSP.
Don't think there was any keyboard. Looked like it would almost fit in a double din all by itself.

ds - nice tablet. do you ever get the tablet os like hanging sometimes? meaning -like when you're playing a song (lets say the laptop has been on for 20 minutes) that the song sorta stops....... for like 3 seconds.... then continues?
same with video?
i have this problem on my x41 laptop. going to 1gb ram didnt help it ;( tablet os sucks so much *** it's not even funny. =(
I mean, i am using the standard image from ibm but i disabled almost every single thing in the startup using msconfig. it's really streamlined in that sense and booting to desktop doesnt take very long. when im running winamp/wmp, i see this issue happeneing.
the rest of the time it behaves perfectly th0! just wonderin.... =/

Ok two other ideas then... get kensington cable and leave it visible... should prevent "thefts of opportunity".
Get good insurance policy... like mine, i can leave it unatended anywhere and it will still be covered... I just took it for peace of mind so i can for example in school to leave it around while going to cafeteria etc... I dont know if this kind of policies are available/affordable in your country... but atleast here, cause theft is veeeery rare indeed, that kind of policies are rather cheap... mine is 60€ per year and laptop is insured for 2500€...

I never seem to have that issue. Music/Video seems to flow perfectly and all I have is 512mb of ram. I use to love this tablet when i first got it but it is way slower than a regular laptop. Its super small though which is amazing. Extremely thin and has a definite wow factor.
My suggestion would be to check your power management. See if anything is set to happen after 20 min because by the sounds of it it sounds like a screensaver or your monitor turning off after a while is causing it.
cheers,

Nice to see tablet advocates here in te forum. With all the stealth install haters we tablet owners need to stick together.
Anyone checked the latest tablet offerings suposedly dual input capable (passive and active, i.e., use yor finger for touch or switch to active for pen/XP Tablet OS)? I figure when I upgrade I'll probably get one of these, but I haven't done the research lately. Need a decent dock with line-in to mount in my three cars to make it worth my while.
