Power button won't work when laptop lid is closed

I have my power button rigged up and working woooh . I noticed my problem the first time I took the laptop out to my car to test it. I closed the lid and tried to power on the laptop... nothing.

I took the laptop back to my work area, opened up the lid and tried my power button again. VIOLA, it works. I couldn't figure out what was going on so I tried the first thing that I thought would cause the problem, that little hinge that hold the lid closed. After "removing" that I tried it again, still nothing.

I looked the whole laptop over and I can't find anything that I can see that would keep the laptop from powering on when the lid is closed. Hopfully someone has had the same experience and can lend me a hand.

I just discovered the same problem today too. LOL. I just open up my case and unplugged the 2 prong wire harness that senses wether the case is open or closed. Lucky for me there was only two screws and one plastic piece that had to be removed to access it. Now it works great.

FYI, my notebook is the HP 4420US.

My laptop has one piece wireharness that goes into the motherboard and two wires (possibly like you suggested) that go way deeper into the motherboard. The screen doesn't work anyway. Are they harmless to just snip off?

If you know for sure that those 2 wires goes to your lid screen closure detection, then yeah.
