Origami UMPC Q/A thread

As you all know, I've been writing extensively about Origami UMPCs at ultramobilegeek.com ... The MP3Car related posts are here:
http://ultramobilegeek.blogspot.com/...-car-umpc.html
http://ultramobilegeek.blogspot.com/...-mounting.html

I have updated my copy of StreetDeck and will be writing my huge conclusion post between now and mid-December and wanted to field any questions that people may have about Origami devices (Asus RH1, TabletKiosk eo, Samsung Q1, et. al) and car integration thereof. Any questions, anyone?

In general, I find that Streetdeck runs just fine on UMPCs, especially if you boost the RAM and storage for media playback. I'm still having a little difficulty getting my bluetooth GPS to work (It attaches to bluetooth COM4 but StreetDeck says it's disconnected) but I will hunt down that problem in the coming days.

Of course, my dream is to have an Infill G4 with Streetdeck, but mp3car.com doesn't offer that yet.

So ... Origami questions, anyone?

The only questions I have are: Why are they so friggin' expensive, and why do no B&M stores seem to have them on display? I'm guessing you wouldn't know the answer to those. I know the first one is probably R&D costs being off-loaded on to the early adopters, but I find it annoying anyway.

Is it possible to run Origami on any other hardware other than a UMPC?

The Origami Experience software? No - it's licensed for UMPC owners only. I think it runs a hardware check on install.

Any reason why the hardware check can't be stopped or fooled?
Has anyone looked into this?
It seems like a great software and would be ideally suited to a car pc.
I know the minimum requirements on it need a 7" or smaller screen but what else is it checking? Can it be ran on a fullscreen emulator for developers? Could this be used to make it work on different hardware?

VIA has a UMPC emulator for UMPC development. Maybe check that out? Other than that, it seems rare that non-UMPC owners are interested in the Origami software since there are other launchers out there.

I haven't tried it yet but from what I can see so far the origami software blows all the other stuff out of the water completely. Seems like the best solution and does all the things I need in a Car PC. I think it's a shame that it's incredibly limited to vista and UMPC owners.
I'll take a look at the emulator and see how that goes.
Cheers

Not too sure about the emulator as it still has the buttons and frame of the UMPC in the display. Anyone tried this?
I'd like to know if it can be removed so we get full screen just like a umpc.

Actually you can run this on something other than a UMPC. Check out the thread over here to see how and how it looks.

I just got it onto a disk last night to try out. I'll be installing tonight. I used Orca to remove the 2 launch conditions settings.
I'll also be setting vista to 800 x 600 and then rebooting on a 7" touchscreen. When I get it tested on the touchscreen, I'll do a quick check to see if it works on a standard monitor. I think 800 x 600 is it's maximum resolution and it cannot upscale the background images. Part of the program is dependant on using these '.png' files. I may have a little experiment to see if I can substitute the pngs for slightly larger images and see if the program is reading the size of the image or if it is set elsewhere. I'll try and report back with my findings.

You might want to set the res. at 800 x 480. I think that is the native res for Origami.

Yes, i think you're right. Although some people are running UMPCS at 800 x 600. I'll try it on both and see what happens.

OK, I have it running at 800 x 600 (i think). I haven't got my touch screen functions running yet as I have a slight issue with drivers. Or that's what I think it is. I have a xenarc 700 YVV.
Anyone know if I can use XP drivers?

OK, I got it all running on my desktop PC and it was running perfectly at 800x600. When I get home tonight I'll be installing the origami on my Mini-itx stuff. I had a few issues with vista drivers for my hardware but i think i have all the stuff I need now to get it fully functional.
I think I'll start a thread and show what I've done.
