Is the acrylic silver thermal paste just like the stuff they sale at radio shack? I have some heat sink compound from there. It's white. I used it sparingly on the cpu b/c I did know if it would be good to get extra on it. I put a dot in the middle of the cpu and installed the heat sink. It seems to run better when I use that 12 volt fan turned on constantly to keep the cpu cool. I'll check out zalman as I've never heard of that brand before, but it seems to work with a better fan. Thanks!

UPDATE: Ran the computer about 2 hours in the car today, and it worked beautifully. No crashes or anything. I used centrafuse to check the cpu temp a couple of times and it seems to be hovering around 55 degrees celcius now with the fan constantly circulating the air.

Thats good to hear.

I should correct myself, it should be called Arctic Silver and it is similar to heat compound you find at Radio shack but it does 10x better of a job. It will cost you around $11 for a tube of it but you'll get 2 or 3 uses out of one tube.

You can buy it at your local computer store or order it online but after shipping it comes out to be the same price.

NO!

2 or 3 uses ? you must be JOKING?!

You should only use a VERY small amount of Heatsink compound!

It has to be such a thin layer it's almost see-thru, it's so wrong to GLOB it all in, and tell other to do it.

A single tube of AS Compound lasts about 50 CPU's or more.

Apply a small drop and level it out with a credit card or the like, and you're set.

NOTHING transfers heat as direct contact does, AS compound is a bad conductor of heat, but better that air (air isolates)

hey, he's right, the only reason you use compound is because the 2 surfaces can never mate perfectly on a microscopic level, the compound is just to fill microscopic voids & allows more heat transfer than the voids, if both surfaces mated perfectly then no compound would even be necissary...

Just to thow in my $.02, it also helps to use some wet-dry sandpaper (600 grit, I think), and a few drops of water and dish soap to lap the heat sink to a polished surface before mating to the CPU with a very thin layer of Arctic Silver. 30 minutes of sanding will make for a well polished surface. If you can, do it with the sandpaper laid out on a flat glass surface, rough side up, and move the heat sink in circles on top of the paper while applying even pressure. You can pull those temps into the 40's with air, if you're careful and take the time.
