Is there anyway I can have the power cord plugged in and the battery inside the laptop, but for the laptop NOT to charge the battery? its sony vaio

not sure what your intentions are or this setup but you could always just gut the cells out of the batt and then reassemble the case of it for the look factor

No.

The only way to not charge the battery is to remove it or hack apart your laptop to not sense the battery was there when a flip was switched or something, but that would require a lot of work, voiding warranties, and soldering. THe short answer is NO.

I don't know why you are so against what I reccommended in the previous thread you started. Hopefully you have read by now that constant charge and discharge is good for a battery. And unless your car is on 24/7, I don't know what the problem would be.

letting a battery die out is a terrible thing to do to a modern rechargable battery.

Whats worse is simply leaving a battery charging all the time is equally bad. You want the battery to discharge some, the recharging porperly.

That being said if you were really adamant of having a battery in but not charging(for what reason I dont know)

best bet would be to :
1: add some wires from each lead of the battery's connection
2: add some wires from each lead to the laptops battery connection.
My laptop has 7 connections for this.
3: Wire up a relay based system that would connect all 7 wires together (properly to the corresponding wire) via a pushbutton/rocker button switch.

With this you'd have control over when the battery is connected to the laptop with a push of a button. More than likely the battery would have to be mounted outside of the laptop (duct tape and bungie cords are your friends)

I have a simple way to do it. Just use a piece of plastic bag to cover the interface of battery.

Correct. Lithium batteries such as in laptops should never be discharged all the way. However, they should be regularly "cycled" by going down to 40% and then charged up to keep maximum life for the battery. And definately never left always charging.

In the other thread he started, I told him this, and a solution would be to just set XP to go to standby when the battery reaches 50%/40%/20%/10% and be done with it. THen when the car is on, it will charge, and all will be good.

I don't see the advantage to simply not charging the battery.

not charging the battery means not killing it. i have a s13.3" xbrite sony vaio, its a new laptop.
