Ok I tried to search for the answer but every topic I found said do a search for it, I never actually found the solution. I have a Kenwood DDX6019 and I am looking to connect my laptop to the screen. The reason I am doing so is because I have a GPS program on my laptop and its a hassle to keep the laptop open on the passenger seat. I know I can get one of those police stands for the laptop but comeon now who actually wants that. Would I need to get a Scan Converter and if so what are some good brands out there? Also might I add I dont wanna fork out the money for a carpc, I think thats a little to advanced and expensive for my taste.

I heard that garmin/kenwood gps add-on is nice with the 6019..

I think this actually may be possible, but complicated. You would most likely need a scan converter. You would have to open up the screen unit and search endlessly for the wires that bring the actual signal to the screen. Even then, there are still several different ways that these signals operate (RGSB, RGBS, RGB) and it would be difficult if not impossible to connect it properly. If this is your last resort, then go for it. If there is another way, though, then go the other way.

Usually those headunits have video ins through RCA. It is not going to be a vga screen for sure, so just get a cheap vga to rca converter and then run an rca cable from laptop to HU. Only thing is if your unit is touchscreen, you cannot control the PC with the HU. You will need a mouse/keyboard so you can tuck away the laptop. And might as well get a dock for the laptop so it is easy-in/easy-out.

And how are you powering this? There are dc-dc units that will do a good job of powering your laptop, as well as an auto plug made for your laptop that you can just plug in/unplug. Or you can wire that to a relay so it is only on when the car is on so you don't drain the battery.

Whoopsie.... Now you have a carpc.

I will look into those vga to rca convertors. I was talking to some guy to crutchfield and asked him the same thing and he said since I have s-video i can get a s-video to rca cable and that will work fine, is that true? I dont think it is because I have a 4-pin s-video adaptor to yellow rca (video) and tried to hook it up to my TV and it didnt work, so I doubt his suggestion would work, unless there is something on my laptop I need to setup to use the s-video. For charging I have a converter made for my laptop to plug into the cig lighter.

Edit: Nevermind I think I figured out how to get the s-video on my laptop working, I will give it a try when I get home from work. Thanks for the help guys I will post back if I can get it working

Well if you have svideo then yes use it. To get the svideo out, you must configure the laptop to shoot video out of it. Default on most laptops is off.

Ok I got it working on my home TV via the s-video. So there should be no problem at all with the Kenwood. Thanks guys for all your help.

For future reference, remember that composite is simply S-Video with a couple of the pins shorted together. That is why S-Video to composite converters are so cheap. Composite to S-Video, on the other hand, are more expensive because they have to separate out the signals.
