what is the part called that holds the ribbon to the buttonboard?
that brown 'tab' that is infamous for breaking when overly excited idiots like myself try to get their display unmounted? i simply want to know what that tab is called so i can research where to find a replacement. mine is only half broken so naturally the button-board on my eby-701 works half the time, if i apply excessive pressure to the housing causing stress on the joined surfaces.

must be 30 people who've read so far who also don't know what it's called.

I'd guess retainer.. but I don't know what it's technically called. I've never tried searching for one, unfortunately..

it's probably called a flex cable connector. Checkout a site like mouser or digikey.com Your best bet is if you could determine the brand of the connector-sometimes there are symbols or initials on the connectors themselves.

cool. i appreciate all the info. has anybody else had to replace this part before? that's my main/only gripe about the eby-701 is the shortness of the ribbon cable going to the button/ir board. it seems that the 619/629 is much longer. the red light comes on all the time the way it is now but w/out applying pressure to the fram the buttons have no response. when they do respond all the blue lights come on and the monitor works fine, i can't use the buttons but i dont need to adjust the settings. i wonder if i were to locate my remote if i could just use that to power the thing on?

YES! zero insertion force? like the old school cpu sockets? other than possibly having a number on it (which i don't believe it does) how do i know which one i need to order? i emailed lilliput but i doubt I'll get a reply.

If it has the retaining lock its a ZIF (Zero Insertion Force)
There is also a LIF connector (Low Insertion force) but I do not believe they have a locking mechanism. You have to actually push the ribbon in these types of plug. ZIF's just slide in easy.
Id guess you need to know the number of pins, the width of the ribbon, and the length of the contact area. Not sure how they are replaced. Check out www.mouser.com

excellent very helpful information, thanks a million, one more question pops in my head. i assume you count the number of lines in the ribbon to determine the number of pins?

Yes it is a ZIF socket, and to count the number of pins, yes just count either the lines in the ribbon or the pins that are soldered to the board on the socket itself.

You will also find these at Mouser or Digi-Key as FFC connectors. Flat Foil.
They come in lock tab and LIF.

again thanks for the help should this be stickied or is it a bit rare for people to have to replace this type of part? perhaps a glossary of terms to help non-circuit savvy folks like myself identify what it is they're trying to repair?

Problem is, those connectors are SMT, and are not the easiest to re-work.
A hot air solder station is needed to remove and repalce them. It is a real pita.
