To start windows, I have to power up my SP13000, then reset it. Any ideas why?

I have an SP13000 with an Opus120 currently in a Morex 3688. For testing purposes, I've been using the case's power buttons to turn the power on and off. I've noticed that everytime I shut the computer down/hibernate and start it back up it hangs at the VIA logo. At this point I have to hit the reset button and it will go past the logo and boot windows or resume from hibernation. This has been consistent every time I've booted while in the car.

Any ideas why it may be doing this? I don't want to have to hit the reset button everytime when I have my opus hooked up to the power switch.

Edit: Sorry, this was supposed to be General Hardware and I couldn't delete it

Well a computer uses the most power on boot. If it is consistant and fixable by then doing a soft on (rather than from no power) that means the drives are still spinning and the fans and cpu are all started allready when you go to restart the post process.

How are you powering the opus? What guage wire?

Also are you using a 3.5" HD or 2.5"?

Does it only have the problem in the car? Is so, it's prolly a power issue. Recalculate your power usage and give a little room to be sure. If not.....

Try boot from CD?

If that doesn't work then.....

Try removing everything cept memory, video, hdd. Then try to boot. If it works then add back other components 1 at a time. If it doesn't boot remove the hard drive and see if it'll tell you it can't find an OS.

If it still doesn't work try removing your memory one at a time if there are two modules. If not try to swap it with another one.

Then you could always try resetting the BIOS. I've seen BIOS' hit by a stray static charge that screwed them up and a reset fixed the issue. *shrugs*

Or you could do what a friend of mine did. ***** and moan about the computer cuz it ain't working. Go buy a new one and give me the old one only to ***** and moan that I got it working perfectly with only a new hdd. Then ***** and moan some more cuz I wouldn't give it back

same problem

I have the same issue. However I just fired up my carputer for the 1st time yesterday so I havent started to work out all the bugs. Same motherboard, Not sure what DC-DC PS I have but its the one designed to work with the Voom Case. Pretty sure my issue is same as yours, bad hibernation state.

I think mine is caused by my power off delay is too short. I have it set at 5 secs. The OS does not have time to write the ram content to disk so when you turn on power it never recovers. I dont have a reset button wired yet but even if I pull power for 10 mins it does not recover. Need to wire the reset button and increase power off delay to at least 30 secs tonight.

good luck

John

Thanks for the suggestions Shai-Hulud. I tried just with memory, hd, mobo plugged in and it still hangs at the first restart. I brought it inside and it boots up the first time, so it must be a power issue in thecar. Only thing is, I re-tried a power calculator and it game up with these results.

SP13000, 2.5 HD, Slim CD, 40mm fan, 2 USB devices

3.3 v rail (8A max for opus120)
Amps 3.15
Watts 10.3

5v rail (8A max for opus120)
Amps 6.52
Watts 33.0

5v SB rail (1.5 A max for opus120)
Amps 0.09
Watts0.47

12v rail (3.5A max for opus120)
Amps 0.32
Watts 3.84

Total
Amps 3.97
Watts 47.6

Opus 120W Details
+3.3V: 8A max
+5 V: 8A max
+12 V: 3.5A max
-12 V: 0.5 A max
5 V standby: 1.5 A max

I'll email opus and ask their opinion

Any progress? The only thing is that this gives the computer a problem when resuming from hibernation and when booting up regularly.
