Question crystalfontz 20x4 backlit red lcd--need help w. soldering

I ordered a 20x4 backlit red lettered LCD with the hitachi processor for parallel port use.
I followed the schematic : http://illegal.sytes.net/lcd.gif ...
and wired it like this http://illegal.sytes.net/matts.jpg
(this only shows the part i'm having trouble with, excludes the pins that are wired directly)

Did i wire it correctly? When i started the computer, the backlight came on for about 40 seconds, and the 10k ohm pot got really hot. I think the pot is grounding at and shouldn't be?

Share your knowledge guys
Thanks!
-Matt

The only parts that should be connected are on the black dots. If the lines cross it's not necessarily a connection, a connection is indicated by a dot.

I'm not sure if you knew this already, but I figured that I'd offer that up incase you didn't know that

mp3car system is currently FUBAR and finances do not allow for a correction of that situation
