Xenarc Power

So has anyone come to a conclusion on powering the Xenarc in the car? Is it safe to use the vehicles 12v considering it's rated between 10-36v@1amp. Or is it better to use a pc's PS?

I've been using the car 12V adaptor for a month. Hasn't caused a problem yet. Now, if I could only force my xenarc to turn itself on when it is given power...

ahhh, excellent. So did you splice the AC power supply and just run it to the cars 12v, or didja buy a generic 12v adapter+plug from radio shack or whatever?

Having the display come on when power is given to it would be wonderful, I keep hoping somebody is gonna come up with a simple circuit to throw a pulse at that sucker

That's exactly why you run it off of the computer's power supply- It provides a true (or close enough) 12v source. A car can provide anything between 12-14vdc. Just because it hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it won't. Kind of a risky move with a $500 investment.

The display is rated for a wide range of voltage. I don't have mine in front of me right now, but I think it went higher than 18V. Which would be fine for vehicle use.

I don't see any damage occuring from the voltage going to low, as the internal regulator would just brown out, so there is no worry about the vehicle power going below the recommended minimum.

It should be perfectly safe to run a FUSED line from your vehicles power, but be warned, DO NOT CROSS THE POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE LINES. You will fry it. As was deemed the case in that post referenced above by InFix.
