Unhappy Xenarc 700IDT Resolution Issues! HELP!

Hey guys,

I'm a first time poster, but a long time reader, ive read up on the issue i will be discussing via search (to an extent) so please bare with me on this.

I received my Xenarc 700IDT (new 500Nit one, looks a little different to the old 700IDT) Anyway ive got it running on a test bench in my room which consists of an ATX power supply providing 12v to my Carputer and the Xenarc.

The general specs for the carputer are as follows:
Motherboard: Jetway J7F2WE2G (2ghz C7 CPU one)
Graphics Card: Via CN700 (VIA S3 graphics if that helps)
HDD: 160gb Samsung
RAM: 1gb DDR
OS: Windows XP Pro
Front End: Centrafuse XLE (Aus Maps)

Whats my problem you may be thinking? Well here goes, when i hooked up the Xenarc to my carPC and fired it up (installed the drivers and all properly) the touch screen works fine but everything looked so blurry (as if it wasn't in its native resolution), I checked the Xenarc's manual and it stated that the native resolution was 800x480. Armed with this knowledge i tried to set these in Windows XP but to no avail, installed Powerstrip to see if i can forcefully set the resolution to 800x480 but once again to no avail. I decided to hop on these forums and i ran a search to see if i could get things working correctly.

What my search revealed is that the CN700 supports a resolution of 800x480 but a bios setting had to be changed, tried it but everytime i went back into windows the BIOS would lose these settings, hopped back on these forums and found out that a new BIOS version (v J7F2W111) would fix this issue, updated the BIOS, not a problem, now windows was detecting the option for the card to go to 800x480, i was excited!

Set this up in both Windows Display and Powerstrip (and using 60hz refresh rate), looked alot better than before, but the image still wasn't as sharp (is that how you describe it?) as i would have liked, i tried mucking around with the Phase settings on the OSD menu of the Xenarc but it still wasn't looking too fantastic. I did some more research and Xenarc suggested using the advanced timing options in Powerstrip, followed these instructions but seemed to put the display into a widescreen mode (think of it like to big black lines one at the top and one at the bottom, like a widescreen movie in a 4:9 monitor, the option on the monitor was still set to 16:9) so i resorted back to the original 800x480 defaults and that is where i currently am.

What i want to know is what settings do my fellow Xenarc users use to display a sharp clear image?

Another question i have regarding this unit is that the screen flickers alot (not refresh rate) ill describe it the best way i can, it looks like the backlight is becoming brighter and then become duller constantly and quickly, i put this down to the power source being an ATX powersupply but is anyone having the same issue in a car environment, or know the cause of this?

Sorry about the stupidly long initial post but any help would be appreciated guys,

I hail from Australia by the way!

Cheers

Adam

Are you having this problem when your testing the unit in your room or is it happening in your car. I'm a bit confused?

Its currently setup on a test bench in my room, the resolution problems wouldn't make a difference if its in the car or not would it? The second part of my problem could be because of the noise introduced from the 12v ATX (norm computer one) power supply, what Powerstrip settings do you have your Xenarc under, i might give that a go and see if it makes a difference?

I think this might be an issue I would recommend you find a clean 12v source and try it. Even if it means bringing a car battery in the house or trying it out in the car.

By the way I'm not running powerstrip. XP is configured at 800 x 600 and my monitor has no sync issues with this. Works like a champ.

in regards to a clean 12v supply i will try it out mate,

Dont u find at 800x600 its a little blurry, the text isnt the easiest to read and the sharpness of the display, well isn't up to scratch? I looks half decent in Centrafuse at 800x600 but i was expecting a pretty good display considering that the item isnt the cheapest thing on the market..

Basically ive got a Laptop sitting next to my test bench and when i put the laptop into a resolution thats not its native res it looks like the Xenarc does, hence why im wondering what settings others use to put the Xenarc into its native res? I think lilliput users also have the same problem as us Xenarc's as their native res is also 800x480, so any input from their side would be appriciated aswell

Hmm no mine is crystal clear. Thats one thing I can say about my Xenarc, it's the best LCD I've owned as far as 7" screen's go.

You are connecting this thing thru the VGA and not thru the AV output on the mobo are you?

Now thats concerning! yep the 700IDT is hooked up via VGA, so yours is just setup to use 800x600 @ 60hz im assuming? I have no other screen other than my Dell 24" LCD and the laptop to compare against hence why i think the quality isn't all that great at 800x600 compared to the other LCD's at my house, it leaves a little to be desired IMO
