so since this 3m upgrade sounds pretty good, any chance someone who knows what they're doing can do a 629 or 619 lilliput worklog?
or will a 701 worklog be close enough to the same thing?
I'm still confused as to what exact sheets to get. So 2 of the 90 degree is the best option, right?

So far what most of us have been playing with is using one or two pieces of BEF-II or BEF-III 90 degree and and a piece of DBEF-E. I used the 0 degree DBEF-E, but I think everyone else is using the 45 degree. Also some have experimented with the ESR as well. According to 3M, using 2 pieces of BEF increasing the brightness over 1 piece, so two should be better.

Speaking of the DC area, if I don't end up doing this and just buying an actual transflective, then I'll have a full set of samples up for grabs at the next meet. My DBEF 45, still hasn't come.
I need to call them about that

One sheet should be enough for 2 layers on a 7-8" lcd ... just cut both out of 1 sheet. Cut one landscape and the other portrait. The lower layer will be veritcal and the top layer will be horizontal - speaking about transmission planes as marked on the film. If you receive 0 or 90 degree i believe that they are the same, just rotated, so if you cut them how you need you can use either. 45 degree could be made 0 or 90 just by cutting it exactly at a 45 degree angle as well.
I am looking at sourcing these from lumex: SSB-CEL15890UWW-24
Supposedly it's a 7" lcd backlight with 5000nits. Cost is about $40-50 each. If these work well I will try to make a batch of them with exact match case for lilliput and xenarc screens. Would be nice to just find a replacement backlight and get something bright as heck that would get us above the 1000nit mark.

I want to note, if you don't cut them perfectly along their transmission lines, and are using 2 layers, you may end up causing moire lines or allow less light thru. I noticed during my testing with 2 loose sheets that just moving them slightly off 90 degrees from each other that you'd see moire's and mismatches in the light output. Just use a straight edge and make sure you cut them along one of the precut edges to keep things parallel. I don't think it makes that much of a difference with the DBEF, just the 2 layers of BEF.

$380ish for a Xenarc 700TSV, makes me want to spend the other $120 and get an transflective Lilliput.
The Xenarc 700TSV (at least the newest model) is 500 nits compared to 400 for the lilliput. I believe the transflective lilliput vs the stock xenarc will produce the same results - not positive though, would be nice to see a direct comparision. Once I install my xenarc i will do a direct comparison (lilliput w/ 3m upgrade vs stock xenarc) and post pics.

Very nice, can't wait!
If it's not too much trouble, can you do what 2k1Toaster did?

this idea sounds good to just get a brighter backlight, but such a higher brightness means more heat, right? will the heat increase be a problem? or are these LED lights in the backlight?
this idea is excellent, less messing with the lcd panel layers which introduces more lint and dust and prints to the screen.

from what i read i believe these are LEDs, 24 of them, possibly luxeon ones... i have 2 coming and will give more details when i get them. They were $34 each from DigiKey, not too bad. The spec sheet is here:

I can't tell, but it looks like a complete backlight assembly possibly.

You have your 700TSV listed as a 7000TSV (reason I poked at that).
Changeip - Good job on being ambitious and willing to explore the solutions you've researched. I appreciate everyone else's contributions as well.

I'll be amending my tutorial soon guys. I went back in because I hadn't gone far enough apparently. When I did, just like PhatMo, I found that there were 2 films besides the diffuser already installed. I have no way of being sure, but one of the films definitely looks looks like BEF. Not sure what the other one is, it's more opaque and looks like it would actually hinder the light distribution. I removed the 2 stock films, re-installed the vikuit films, put it all back together and tested it in the house again, but just like last time I didn't get the results I was hoping for. I triple checked everything this time, so I know it's in the right way. It still needs to be tested in the car, but I just can't figure out why i'm not getting the results everyone else is.
