I didn't actually change anything. Rather I added on. Before I stopped at flipping the LCD out of the way. I then laid the films down. That was incorrect. The metal casing around the backlight needed to be removed in order to remove the factory films which I was unaware where present on the older Xenarcs.

I just got my sample sheets from 3M. No notification they were sent or anything. I may order more if they'll let me since I used my real info and didn't lie about the reason for the sample request.
Anyway, I got some BEF II 90/50, DBEF-E 0 Degree, ESR, and a tiny sample of ARMR-200 (which I guess will go on my wife's Dell Axim since it's too small for an LCD). Can't wait to get them installed, but in what order would I install them or does it matter?
edit: nevermind... was so excited I didn't read ALL the stuff they sent with the films. Hopefully will be doing this tonight on my spare lilliput screen. Looks like I may have to order a second BEFII film though as they state that 1 sheet increases the brightness by about 60%, and two sheets by about 120%. guess it could get too bright as well huh?
anyway... I noticed that it says it 'focuses' the light on axis... does it also decrease viewing angle?
Thanks! This thread is awsome!

So last night I experimented with those samples. Was able to cut 2 sheets of the BEF II 90/50 and put them at a 90 degree angle to each other as the literature said was most effective. Also put the DBEF 0 degree on top of those. Took the backlight apart and removed the plain white piece that was the backing, and replaced it with the ESR film (that stuff is awsome).
Now for the bad news. The last time I took it apart (had some dust or something in there that was annoying) I think I broke some connections in that short fat ribbon cable as now I only get a white screen so I'll have to fix that cable before I can really give it a good test in the sun. It did seem brighter though, and the viewing angle from side to side was absolutely amazing. I could litterally see it perfect at nearly at all points in a 180 degree viewing angle. Top to bottom wasn't quite as good, but still good enough for the car since I'm not going to be looking at the screen from down through the windshield.
so a question for the LCD/lighting experts. What's better? A glossy white backsheet in the backlight unit to reflect light... or the ESR film which claims to have >98% reflectivity across the light spectrum? I'm thinking the ESR since any light that gets to the backlight from outside will be reflected back out.

I'm not familiar with the ESR film, is that for the very very back wall of the backlight ? I'll read into it later. I would think it's engineered to be better than a glossy old-school backing : )
Yes, you will lose some viewing angle by applying both sheets of BEF. The principal behind the film is that it focuses the light into the viewing angle more. If your looking at your LCD straight on (or close to it) then there should be a big improvement with brightness. I think it helps more than it hurts thats for sure.
I read somewhere that Sharp designed an LCD that could also scan using the same pixels ... so bye bye touchscreen overlays in the future hopefully. I'm curious - if I remove the touchscreen and glass all together and use a mouse do I really gain that much sun readability ? Anyone ever compared ?

The ESR film is VERY reflective. And yes, for the VERY back wall (and sides, and to go behind the ccfl as a reflector).

I applied it anyway, figured if it didn't work, I'd just put the old glossy crap back in. But I figured with a >98% reflection of the light spectrum it can't be that bad.
As for your question on if removing the touchscreen provides that much difference...I'd say yes, it does. I have 2 lilliput screens, one without a touchscreen (broke it) and the one without is the one I'm experimenting with the films on. I'd have to say that without that touchscreen the visibility in the sun is MUCH better as I get less glare and reflection because the LCD surface is a matte finish and not somewhat glossy like the touchscreen.

If you can live with out a TS, it is the way to go. No milky glare and definitely brighter, and that make is much easier to read when the sun hit.

I just put in a request for some sample sheets. Hopefully they will come.
Now i didn't waste getting the the antiglare treatment but for those that have it do you think it may be worth trying to get ahold of some larger sheets?
And it ticks me off that mp3car has access to touchscreens that are polarized and clearer yet they wont sell them. It just shows that mp3car is more focused on making money off of us. Arg

BEF II 90/24
BEF II 90/50
BEF III 10T
My screen is a Lilliput K301
