3m upgrades

So last night I decided to give the 3M (Vikuiti) products a shot on my lilliput 701. Previously I could not even see the screen in the sunlight while driving, and now after the upgrade I'm happy to say that it worked wonders!

I layered a BEF II 90/50 and DBEF E film behind the LCD panel and it totally helped. Didn't seem to make much of a difference with brightness, however it's much better in the sun, actually still visible in direct sunlight. I swear the aliens made this stuff, there's no way this is made here on earth. : )

and

Those 2 films, based on free samples, and 2 hours time I now have an great screen in my truck now.

My question is this ... when someone purchases a 'transflective' upgrade, what films are typically used? This same 3M product or something else ?

PS - gloves and patience definately required.

Sam

got them from their samples dept ... they allow you to request 3-4 samples and deliver them within a week. I screwed up and got a 45 degree DBEF though and a 90 degree BEF II / III. I would have been better off getting the same layout for all of them. There is also DBEF on ebay right now for $1.99 a sheet ...

Cool, can you get some pics of the screen working in sunlight so we can see it in action?
Also you say you put the films behind the lcd panel, i'm probably missing something here but i'm a little confused.. how does that work? I would have guessed the films would go between the touch panel and the lcd or something..

If I would have read the specs better I would have ordered the 90 degree for both layers ... since you take 2 90's and then turn one of them 90 degrees. cross hatch pattern I guess. I tried to cut my 90 into a 45 but not sure that it works that way.

I will take some pics tomorrow when its sunny and after ive fully mounted it (still need to mount the lcd buttons after the upgrade).

Yes, the film goes between the light source and the LCD panel, not between the LCD panel and the front glass.

Here is a pic in the sun this morning... full sun from a 9am angle. Very pleased with the result even though i didn't get it as bright as i could have with 2 films.

Wow, very impressive results! How big were the sample pieces they gave you? I might crack open my T-View screen and attempt this upgrade. Here's hoping I don't let the smoke out of anything lol

Wow awesome results!
Wonder if they send samples to the UK?
Might give this a go if they do!

Well it looks like they will send some samples to the UK so I've ordered a few sheets.
Might need some pointers from you on how to lay these sheets for the best outcome if you don't mind - as the technicals of this are far beyond me.. but the practical part of stripping the screen I'm fairly happy with.

I say we ask for more pictures!

I'm also curious as to how clean the area/room has to be for this. I thought you needed a clean room~

So, if I buy a Lilliput 629 ($245), apply these films, is that essentially what the mp3car.com store is selling here for $679?

Trying to figure out what I'm getting for an extra $434 by buying a "transflective" screen.
