Home LCD monitor in car?

I want to get an LCD monitor to stick in my rear seat for my kids to watch movies on. I was thinking about getting a 15" regular computer lcd monitor. Can I just plug this into my CarPC for power somehow? Or do I need to get an inverter? What's the usual voltage requirements?

usually they require weird voltages not easily had in a car environment. An inverter would be your best bet if you are too finicky about noise issues and waste.

I checked a few a while ago, and they were 19v (Old Dell one), and 16v (Viewsonic I believe). Both voltages are attainable, but not in the multi-amperage range needed. Easily that is.

I did a search on 15" lcds and they were in the range of 20-30 watts, so that would be like 2amps or so at those weird voltages, right? so would that mean that i need a pretty tiny inverter.

I used a 15" LCD in my truck for a while because it was all I had and i was in the preliminary build phase.
I was powering it with an inverter, but it could take 12v, if I wanted to hack together a connector. I never bothered, since it was just a temporary setup anyway.

Check the power requirements of various monitors. You might find one that will meet your needs.

Do they need a pretty clean signal, or will a cheap inverter do? I have a 75 watt cigarette lighter inverter that i'm thinking about hacking apart to stuff it somewhere less visible.

I used a cheap $30 400w inverter that I got at Fry's. They sell the same inverter at Wal Mart.
It worked like a charm.

As a follow-up, I got a 200 watt Black & Decker inverter at Walmart to run my 15" Viewsonic LCD and it worked great. The kids were pleased.
