Custom motorzied LCD housing: Components and techniques?

I'm just starting to put together my first CarPC. I'm currently in the process of designing the motorized housing and cover panel for a 7" LCD touchscreen and I'd like some feedback.

My first shot at this design goes something like this (please forgive the poor drawing quality, just started learning Google SketchUp). The block on the left side shows the screen recessed with a cover over it. The right side shows the screen extended and the panel lifted up.

The touchscreen will be fixed to a moving carriage. When the car is off the touchscreen sits behind a panel in the dash. When the car is turned on the carriage is pushed forward into position while the panel rotates up. The touchscreen itself doesn't rotate at all, it just moves forward and back. A geared DC motor will turn a threaded shaft to move the carriage, similar to the setup you'd see in a plotter or CNC machine. I'm a bit concerned that I didn't see any similar designs looking through the forums. Is there something obvious I'm missing here?

For anyone who's done a custom motorized system like this, what motors did you use?

Seems like an awful amount of wasted/unused space...

The entire thing should have the same orientation as your screen. If it is a portrait screen, then above will work, but still the actual screen to box ratio is still to big.

I would go for something more along the lines of the kit sold in the store fro g35 owners.
