new computer project... question about ebay LCDs...

Hi guys

I'm glad a i found a forum w/ so much information. I was using the search function and trying to answer some of the questions i had in my mind by searching...

I don't understand the concept of the touch screen.... i know it requires some sort of controller, but how does it all work? Well what i mean by that is I am planning to build computer in my car. Basically, I need the PC ( i already have ) and an LCD screen.

I see these Legacy 5" LCD screens (not a touch screen) on ebay for about $80. Anyone have any experience with such LCDs??

The motherboard I have has a built in TV (RCA) out so i don't have to worry about the VGA conversion as i have read in some of the other posts.

I have to keep this project under $200 and I alreay have the computer... I need the LCD screen and a wireless keyboard/mouse. Any advice/insight into this would be much much appreciated! Thanks guys.

it will be hard to see on a 5"....especially with it being non vga...

the view angle on the legacy lcd sux!!! so unless you are looking at it dead on you won't see ****.

Are the legacy screens Full Colour? i dont know exactly what they are, but make sure theyre colour.

For a touch screen, there are basically 3 parts:
1)the screen, just an lcd screen.

2)the touch screen overlay: this goes over the screen (or is built into the screen casing) and is basically the sensor that detects where your finger presses. There are several different kinds, the 2 most popular are capacitive and resistive.

3) the touch screen controller: this connects to the touch screen overlay and then either connects to the serial, ps2 or USB port. The controller basically translates between the overlay and the computer, so that the computer sees it as a mouse.

You can usually buy any of the pieces on their own, or all in one big package. You do need to make sure that the overlay and the controller are compatable, as there are no standards for them. you can usually get a generic (3M) overlay to fit onto most any screen, but you need to make sure of the exact dimensions for it to fit.

oh dang, i just connected the computer to my 32" TV... you're right even on that it sucks. So you recommend getting a VGA LCD? The only thing i plan to run on the PC tho is some dvd movies and MP3's w/ visualizations. blah this is not cool!

What would happen if i got a VGA to RCA inverter and connected that to the LCD? thanks for hte input.

legacy lcd is color but believe me you will not be happy! i seen a visonik today that was pretty good quality.

i used to have a 5" lcd and it worked ok. I just upgraded to a 7" (dscustoms) and it is so much better. looks great!! just some advice.

wow hmm... was it RCA? And was it a computer u were running it off of? I'm just curious about that because that's the setup i was considering doing. I'd probably leave the computer's resolution at the lowest possible... 640x480. Thanks!

RCA/Composite outs are never going to be as sharp as vga. Depending on the card, a vga to rca converter might provide a slightly better picture, but will still be nothing close to vga. The problem with small vga screens is they are quite expensive. Well, not so much the screen usually, but the controller that drives the screen is usually a few (300) hundred by itself.

Thanks for the great input guys. After browsing through all these forums, I have noticed i'm probably using the most weaksauce computer possible lol. I have decided that I will be using a PS1 LCD screen...

Anyone have experience w/ those? I believe i'll be using the 5" made by Intec. THanks!
