Powering LinitX 7" LCD From Car12v or M2-ATX?

Hey all,

This is my first post.. I've been actively/daily when i get a spare minute, trawling through the forums of both here and digital-car for any advice I need for my new CarPC project.

I build and maintain IT systems for a living so the computer build is quite simple but I fall down when it comes to simple electronics.. however, I am learning at a rapid rate..

I have a question that I cannot seem to find a straight answer to from searching the forums.

I want to find the best solution to powering my 7" LinitX LCD in my car. This is my scenario:

Car: Mk4 VW Golf GT TDI 150
CarPC: M10000, 1Ghz, 1GB, M2-ATX, Slim DVD, USB 4 Port Hub up front, 7" LinitX TFT, BU-353 USB GPS Mouse, Silabs FM Radio USB, Belkin USB Bluetooth adapter, Zyxel USB WLAN Device...

I have seen many posts on powering the LCD direct from the car's 12v+ and I've seen some power it from the M2-ATX's power.

Can anyone give me some sound advice..

Hi, foley,

im in the same situation and ahve come to a conclusion for myself, i shall share with you the theory on how you can power your screen.

I am going to create a picture showing the entire circuit from baterry to pc/screen in a way that makes more sense (to me anyway)

hold tight and ill have it done shortly (not only should this help you, and others, but its a way i can make sure ive got it right too! :P )

That image was exactly what I was I was thinking but needed some reassurance I was doing the right thing. Thanks so much, that's a huuuge help

I'm alsi wanting to run a powered USB Hub and a cam too from the M2, I guess this can be done the same way, what dya think?

A powered USB hub will take 5v instead of 12v, but the concept is the same.
Make certain you're not drawing more power than the M2 can put out.

yeh, as darq said, the usb will only need 5v, but the concept is the same, and have a good look around at the different versions of the M2, some have different features and different wattages, tho a 160w should do you good

[edit]: also, by using the distribution block, you could connect up more DC power suplies, not another M2, but smaller 40w for example. this would make sure the M2 isnt being sucked dry by everything you might want to add
