These suck, I have had two and both died quickly. The motors did not last long so the screen would not eject all the way, or would get stuck a lot.
That would be my experience anyway...

is there something better for the same sort of money.
or would it be better to just get a manual one instead of the auto one.

again any suggestions?

I live outside the US, so getting them repaired would be a lengthy process i suspect

Are your bad experiences with the older generation units? It is my understanding that the newer 4th generation units have address the gears & other problems. Has anyone a newer unit that can confirm this? It seems all the reviews are terrible for the 1st few years these units have been out, but silent about them the last year or so. Is it perhaps no news is good news? I see them on ebay allot, so I am sure they are still selling. I've been looking at them to to replace my crappy display. I was considering the new xenarc mdt-7000, but it has lots of issues too... The single din world has so few options....

Nope, tossed all of it... Got sick of trying to make the stupid things work.
Check out Digital World Wide and see if Armen can get you the parts you need. I picked up a motor from him to try to repair one of them.
But as expected it worked for a while and then took a s#!t.

As for the new generation models, I guess years of dissappointed people would probably cause most to stop trying.

I was interested in all parts.

I am trying to hack it and make it work in a half-din motorized indash machanism.

Don't you still have some parts left?

I have one of these and they are pretty crappy. The stereo portion had terrible reception, the buttons would not work all the time, and the amplifier was weak and noisy. Also, the clock never worked right and now the little LCD only shows gibberish, if it shows anything at all. I hit it a few times and it blinked out (thankfully, as I do not no why it insisted on showing hours:minutes:seconds, not to mention that it could not keep time to save its life)

Within six months, the gears stripped and it is now a manual open and closed device, which is fine, as it works faster to pull it open than wait for the slow motor to laboriously open and close the screen. I glued a hinge to the back of the screen which stick out a little when it is closed to give me something to pull it open with, but closes behind the screen when open. I also put some Velcro on the dash and the monitor to hold it open when in use. Looks ugly when closed, but you cannot see it when in use.

The monitor itself is par with the rest of the non-transflective screens: hard to see in the daylight, but serviceable after adjusting the gamma, brightness, and contrast. The touchscreen portion works fine.

Eventually, I will remove the screen from the case and build it into my dash, as I no longer use the tuner for anything. Instead I have a separate amplifier and a Visteon HD radio tuner.

Good luck
