Out of Range error

So I fired up the ibm t42 laptop carputer that I am still trying to set up and everything booted fine on the screen. A couple of minutes later all of a sudden the screen goes blank and a message appears on the lcd saying out of range. Anyone know why this is happening and how to fix it? This is a brand new in dash lcd monitor that was working for a day or two so seems strange why it would start happening all of a sudden. It happened in the early morning but the temps weren't too cold for california weather. Tried searching but didn't find anything that was exactly the same problem.

I have the monitor connected with vga cable and usb for the touch screen. Power is connected to the same harness as my clarion head unit.

I found a thread where people were saying I should lower the refresh rate. This may make sense because I used a custom resolution setting in powerstrip in order to get the 800x480 resolution. I'm going to try and lower the refresh rate to see if that solves the problem.

So I look at what my refresh rate is set at and it says 60 hz. I decide to lower it to see if that solves the out of range problem. I tried 57 hz and then 50 hz but still get the same error on the lcd screen. Question is, how low should I set the refresh rate? Should I just go back to 800 x 600 and forget trying to hit 800 x 480?

Out of range means you have one or more settings beyond what the monitor is capable of displaying.

The usual culprit is the refresh rate, but size can also cause the same behaviour (depends on the monitor).

Hook your puter up to a regular crt monitor and see what it is running. Adjust the settings and try the in dash until you find something that works.

You can start at 800X480 and a refresh around 70-72 hz to start with (that's where my lili likes to be).

Be aware that there are alot of settings in powerstrip you have to get right for a custom resolution to work properly.

If you can't find a rate that works, you may just have to stick with 800x600..........

Thanks for the reply! I think that could be the problem, instead of lowering it down I'll try and bring it back up to 70 hz and see what happens. Worst case, I think I can live with 800 x 600, just wanted to get it exactly right by trying to hit 800 x 480 using powerstrip. Got a response from the manufacturer to change it in the bios. I think I'd rather try and do it in powerstrip first.

Powerstrip was a little hard to figure out at first, I ended up using one of their already set up 800 x 480 60 hz profile. When I tried to set it up myself by clicking the up and down buttons, I could never get it just right. And after choosing the profile you have to click ok and then move the slider to choose it again, then apply. Kind of confusing if you don't know what you're doing.

Okay I figured out what was happening although I do not know why. First off, I tried raising the refresh rate to 70 hz, but still got the out of range error. So I decided to just go back to using the 800 x 600 standard resolution, but still gave me the same error. Finally tried to switch it back to 1024 x 768 but the error still came on the screen! Then it came to me. The out of range error is coming on right after powerstrip loads to the system tray. So in desperation I remove the powerstrip program and whoola! No more out of range error. I cannot tell you why it doesn't like the powerstrip program but now it works without the error so I'm just going to be happy the way it is.
